I build many of my characters off figures from literature and fiction... Some of my favorites:

Huckleberry Finn
Deckard (BladeRunner)
Frankenstein's Creation
Walter White's alter ego, Heisenberg (Breaking Bad)
Billy Parnhum (Cormac McCarthy's The Crossing)
Walter Sobchak (The Big Lebowski)
Doc Cochran (Deadwood)

I find writing out your character first, if for solely RP purposes, helps alot....

Like, you could be ex-alpha squad sniper, who got kicked out for putting down a corrupt general. with no other place to turn to, you went to the strip, gambled away everything you owned, and ended up owing a lot of money to a lot of bad people. You took the job as courier to try to get outta debt, little did you know, your first delivery would be you last.....

you can either break free from Mr.House or serve him. you would use Energy weapons and Unarmed.

First character was just named "Courier." NCR aligned, hung out with Cass and Boone mostly. I thought of him as no-nonsense and interested in finding out why the heck he got shot (because the main quest doesn't make ambivalence about this an option anyway).

Second character, Davis, is a scientist/nerd. Planning on aligning with Mr. House in admiration of his technical legacy. Don't think I will do much beyond the main quest with him.

Eventually, I plan to do a Wild Wasteland playthrough aligning with no one but myself. Already created the character -- Elvis Presley (or the closest approximation I could make using the face editing tools). Still trying to decide what weapons Elvis would use, but I guess he played a cowboy on the big screen, so maybe I will give him revolvers and dress him up in some combination of Kings outfits and/or the space suit (because, come on, we all know where he's really been all this time).

Also eventually, I plan to do a Legion-aligned playthrough as an assassin named Eve (focus on guns and sneak, with perks like The Professional). I really hate playing as a bad guy, though, so I'm putting that off. I kind of just have to do it for work purposes (being an academic video game researcher who writes about storytelling and dialog in games).

Holy smokes, you are right. I wonder if you can do that and still get the gun he gives you for his quest? This, after all, my "wacky" playthrough, so I'm picking up as many weird perks and weapons as I can. Can you hit people with that guitar?

Oh man, now you've made me want to quit my scientist playthrough altogether and start hitting people with a guitar. Thank you.

EDIT: Okay, can't hit people with it, but still nice to have around the house. Good call.

On my third playthrough

First one was: Ghost (tribal from the NCR) a jack of all trades who supported the NCR and was suprised to meet an NPC also called Ghost in the game.

Second one was: John 'Black Jack' Longknife, slightly crazy sniper (only ever used firearms with a scope, no exceptions) who supported the Legion and played a lot of blackjack.

Third playthrough is: Kris Richardson, ex-eastern enclave and a distant relative of the enclave president in FO2....fleed the fall of the enclave in the east and traveled to the west, got a job as a courier and promptly gets shot in the head. Mainly this is an excuse to force myself to use the energy weapons on one playthrough.

My first character started out with little direction or roleplay other than knowing he was going to try and be the good guy. Eventually i gave him a nice backstory as i was playing him and after some in game events occured he wanted to become a part of the Elite NCR Rangers. So he is sort of the squeaky clean, marine type but he does have some flaws that may lead to his demise.

2nd Character is going to be an idealist with tremendous sniping, lock picking, unarmed and explosives talent. He is named Lincoln Morris, is an african american and was named for the 16th president. He is probably going to be following the Wild Card quest path for the obivious reasons. He wont want the power, but he does want things to change in the wasteland.

3rd Character is a real bastard, Melee, Shotguns, dumb as a rock, but a very talented gunsmith and addicted to almost every chem out there. He started off pissed off at everyone and eradicated Goodsprings with the gangers. However he realized being an outlaw didnt pay too well and took up a job with the caravans, now he ships weapons and custom ammo around the wastes.

I cannot wait till Christmas and can get the last of the parts for my computer, mods will help with soo many new rp ideas.

Alan Westford:

Born in the town of Silver City, Nevada, Alan Westford was the youngest of three sons. His mother and father, Roxanne and Phillip Westford respectively, were fairly prominent members of the community... owning and operating Westford General Supplies. This meant that, as the Westford boys matured into responsible advlts, a certain amount of funding could be afforded to them, that they might strike out on their own.

Paul Westford, the eldest son, chose to take up the daily operation of Westford General Supplies after his father retired.

Edward 'Eddie' Westford started his own caravan, the 'Silver City Merchant Express'. Eventually, as the caravan began to show more promise, they were approached by representatives of Mojave Express, a courier group, interested in moving parcels along safe, well-proven trade lanes.

Alan Westford, who at the time was working for his brother Edward, volunteered to deliver the first package. He found that, on top of the money his brother paid him, delivering Mojave Express packages proved to be a rather sizable bonus to his income. He even went so far as to take deliveries which were well beyond the normal termination point of the Silver City Merchant Express.

Such was how he found himself on the road to New Vegas... only to be shot, robbed, and left for dead in a shallow grave.

----------------------------------------

Dr. Andrea Blake:

Doctor Andrea Blake was born in Vault City, the child of an Outlander donor and a bureaucratic nightmare of a mother. Although she shared her mother's discomfort around anyone who wasn't from within the walls of Vault City, her sense of adventure and her drive to do great things ultimately lead to them having a confrontation. Her mother, a Civic Amenities Officer with the Department of Civil Affairs, expected that her daughter would follow suit and take up a job working for the 'administration' of Vault City.

When she discovered, instead, that Andrea had chosen to spend her time in the village outside the gate... assisting the doctor, there, in tending to the Outlanders whom wandered in in need of treatment, the situation became heated.

In a huff, Andrea informed her mother that she refused any longer to be a slave to a system that was killing them all slowly... and then proceeded to storm off out of town with nothing to her name but a medical bag and a laser pistol 'borrowed' from the Amenities Office. Under any normal circumstances, she most certainly would not have lasted a week, or even a few days.

However, it so happened that a caravan headed from Vault City to San Francisco came upon her some days later.

Battered, beaten, and naked (her jumpsuit had been stripped off and used to make 'shoes' instead)... the caravan master gave her a decision. Either she could stuff herself into some clothes, put on some armor, and help escort the caravan with them in exchange for food, water, and a fraction of the pay... or they would leave her with just enough supplies to get back home.

She turned out to be quite good with a rifle.

The caravan reached San Francisco on schedule, and even went so far as to pay Doctor Blake not only the full going rate of a guard, but also for her services in a number of wounded and ailing guardsmen along the route. Being that this was precisely the sort of work she wished to do, she immediately signed up for a secound tour. And a third, after that.

Before long, Andrea Blake became the stuff of rumors and legend. Stories told of her heroic rescue of two young caravaners assailed by a ferocious Deathclaw. Others began to spread regailing her as the woman who 'Killed Those Morton Bastards Good'. Each one became more fantastical and fictitious than the last... but it didn't change the fact that people began to ask for her and her team by name.

When you wanted something delivered, on time and without casualties, you asked for 'That Caravan with Doctor Blake in it.'

And so it came to pass that, upon one fateful day, a strange item passed from the hands of a Mojave Express courier... to a Crimson Caravans manifest. The Platinum Chip was to be in New Vegas. A large sum was to be paid. The courier, a young woman Andrea had never worked with before, said that there was something very strange about the whole thing. There were all kinds of rumors going around the office regarding what sort of a thing this odd little chip was, and why it was worth so many caps to get it to Vegas by the time required.

Andrea, of course, insisted upon keeping herself close to the courier-girl. She was concerned for her safety, after all. If this thing was dangerous, then it was very likely to be a target. She spent the better part of the first half of the trip, just mentally preparing herself for the potential dangers that faced them once they got where they were going with the thing.

Ultimately, it never got there. Sometime shortly after arriving at the Crimson Caravans compound, the courier girl went missing. The chip, however, remained in Andrea's care. She hadn't thought much about it at all after arriving.

She certainly never expected to get shot in the head for it.

Well i didn't test this out yet, but I have an idea....

So the character starts out normally like any other, but once they get to Freeside they meet the followers of the apocalypse and change greatly. They decide that the followers are the best hope for the wasteland and that their goal is to get as many resources as possible for them, at whatever it takes. The character travels the desert and robs, cheats, steals, and kills to get anything he can to donate to the followers. He wipes out entire settlements and camps to get resources and supplies. This would probably lead to bad karma, but he figures its all for the greater good anyway. He would probably side with Yes Man to take over Vegas himself, simply because it gives him more opportunities to help the followers. Eventually, when he does all this, he realizes that his senseless murder made the Mojave a much more violent place. He then decides to kill all of the followers of the apocalypse because he blamed them for his actions, but overdoses on the psycho he took before starting the massacre.

A few. Roleplaying is a hobby of mine.

Synthia, the unarmed/energy-oriented prototype Android developed by House and RobCo before the war. After years of dormancy, she is entrusted with securing House's chip under the guise of a Mojave Express courier. After being shot by Benny, a significant memory chip located in her cranium is damaged - leading her to forget who (and what) she is, as well as her purpose. Synthia's quest through the wastes becomes a journey of self-discovery as she discovers what it means to be human, as well as her original mission.

Ronin, a melee-oriented mercenary of questionable moral fortitude. A former courier for the Mojave Express, the NCR finally caught up to him after a life of misdeeds - he is imprisoned in the NCRCF until the prison break, and the rise of the Powder Gangers. An extremely arrogant man, he believes himself intellectually superior to the wasteland at large, and sees little value in helping those in need. He is an expert in bladed weapons, such as swords, knives, and machetes - this, coupled with his wandering nature, leads him to identify with the lordless samurai of old. An entirely self-taught student of philosophy and military tactics, Ronin adapts a distinct social-Darwinist, hyper-Objectivist outlook on life. After seperating himself from the Powder Gangers, he finds the purpose and discipline he craves with the Legion, and becomes Legate Lanius's retainer and second. Ronin is a bisixual, though he has a pathological hatred of women due to their perceived weakness in his eyes. Ultimately, he is the product of a gifted mind twisted by years of incarceration and violence.

More to come, probably.
