Okay this has been bugging me since HH release... well actually since I found the Survialist's Rifle and used it to OWN ZION. Anyway, I've noticed that the sights are crooked. It looks like they are off to the left by just a bit. I have a hammer at my home base (Abandoned BoS Bunker) can I fix these? Please?

They are ment to be like that. Use the right post as the point of reference.

They were meant to be crooked like that. Just use the right part of the sight as the center instead of the actual center. I know its kinda annoying at first but it gives the gun character

It's the gun the Father used (forget his name) for years just after the bombs fell, isn't it?
Crooked sights must just be wear and tear.

They work fine as is and help make the rifle unique, I like the sights.

According to the wiki they're crooked because jit was converted to fire 12.7mm. I guess that means it used to be a Service Rifle? That would be one hell of an overhaul. changing a 5.56mm rifle round to a 12.7 pistol round would mean chaning the barrel, the firing mechanism, probably the gas/piston system... I don't know enough about this stuff!

It's meant to be an "official conversion ordered by military of the Fallout World's US Army" of the service rifle for a special use, it's a "Security Checkpoint RIfle"
just like in real life, the problem of stopping vehicles potentially loaded with suicide bombs or just running through a checkpoint is serious.
Standard 5.56mm bullets are tiny and while they'll tear right through a car, they're too small to do much damage to the vehicle's engine and often ricochet off things like windows when you least expect/want it, and aren't good "man stoppers" so, heavier calibre weapons or belt fed weapons are liked.

Fanatics, especially doped up on drugs, are hard to stop quickly and reliably, just like in late 1800s when the UK invented the .455 Webley "Manstopper" from it's colonial battles, and the USA turned to the .45 Colt Auto from lessons learned with the Morros, for stopping dangerous enemies in their tracks. You need big slow, or really dman powerful rounds, or even dumdums (which are illegal for the military but not police)
today we've got similar issues in Iraq/Afghaistan, folk doped up on hash, steroids and/or heroin, plus they maybe even be wearing poor quality body armour, so for that and other reasons, there's more use of 7.62mm weapons (see UK's "Marksman's rifle"), shotguns (which are brilliant manstoppers and for house clearance and sheer intimidation) and M4 conversion to .50 cal or other heavy calibre weapons

In the real world, there's a special conversion of the M4 rifle ot fire .50 calibre rounds, FYI, *not* .50 cal Browning, forget what the bullet is exactly, it is NOT a pistol round though, huge bloody bullet definately rifle class, not pistol, looks like the old Nitro Express type: straight sided with rounded bullet. Created for shooting vehicles (or one presumes, suicide bombers since it had something like 6000 ft/lbs of power I think they said?? versus about 1500 ft/lbs for typical 5.56mm?). If need I can go try find the links for it.
So the Survivalist's Rifle is meant like that: a heavy calibre weapon designed to stop Chinese or other infiltrators ramming through or blowing up checkpoints, enterign bases etc. The fictional Fallout world echoing the real world, which is cool!

It was designed that way. It's intentional.

I dont know where you got that information from but wiki states the weapon contains the following engravement: "PROPERTY OF U.S. GOVT CHKPNT CARBINE 12.7MM CAL". This suggests it was 12.7mm before the bombs even fell. No convertion. Also, it states that the front sight was damaged and that the Survivalist couldnt or didnt repair it. It is more likely that the Service Rifle is a "mock up" NCR redesign of the weapon series the Survivalist's Rifle belonged to, complete with improved sights and 5.56mm ammo compatibility (perhaps cheaper produced ammo than 12.7mm, or most NCR soldiers cant cope with the power of 12.7mm weapons).

no, other way around, the Checkpoint RIfle was a converison of the standard Service Rifle
as said go read up about it, both Fallout and RL weapons.
It's meant as a heavier weapon to stop vehicles or suicide bombers going through checkpoints.

oh and the cartdige IS based off the .50 Cal Action Express round! So yeah, using 12.7mm round in Fallout makes sense (though the Beowulf cartdrige is even mroe powerful)
