The way you play the game

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 5:43 am

So, I was looking at the thread about the number of saves people have and it got me thinking.. how many of you out there have multiple saves and create multiple characters?

Ever since I played Oblivion, my style of playing was simply create my character, have a couple of autosaves and an occasional quicksave, play through everything I can and then restart after deleting everything. Only later did I start making number saves on the throne of SI wearing The Lich Kings armor courtesy of a mod.

I've been playing Skyrim pretty much the same way: Create my character in Helgen, play through the game with 3 autosaves and the occasional quicksave, play everything I can and then delete and restart. I've never created 2 characters at once because that's just not the way I play the game (or any game for that matter) and to have more than the 3 autosaves, a quicksave and maybe an occasional number save (001,002,etc.) with multiple characters would drive me nuts. And now, a few questions to satisfy my curiousity.

How many of you already have multiple characters?

How often do you save?

Is it hard to navigate between all your characters/saves?

Which is your favorite character?

Those are the only few I can really think of, but I can't imagine playing with so many saves. When I'm done with a character now (and I haven't been doing this since Skyrim came out, my computer svcked anyway), I simply make a number save, cut the file out of the game files and place it into the folder before. That way, I can bring the file back into the game and load it up then put it away again.. and there's a loose end I want to tie up in at least one of them. One reason why I restart as much as I do is because of the different ways I have learned to experiment with my character.. and each time I do, my characters level is higher than it was last time.

I have about 5 characters. Yes, FIVE!
Bosmer archer, Khajiit theif, Orc tank, Breton alt/conjeration mage and Imperial Vamp/blocker
My quicksave frequency is on the highest, so i save A LOT, not including manual saves
My fav at the moment is between my Orc and Khajiit.

Hehe.. I'm glad I found this avatar too and that it was an Argonian as it fits perfectly. It also reflects my personality somewhat as I'm a nightowl. I've considered making a Khajiit (almost did) but they don't have what the Argonians have, so I changed my mind.

^ That is actually the reason why I don't make multiple characters.. then I have to start thinking about each one individually. Honestly though, Argonians are the only race that appeal to.. look no further than my avatar

My way of playing is almost exactly like yours. I'm not fond of having to scroll down 50 saves saying SAVE 3XX, CORNELL, NORD, LV XX to find one that finally says another character. Most of my characters are Nords/Bretons named Cornell. Usually they've been swordsmen/archers/battlemages. They've always been loyal to the empire, and they've always stayed werewolves even after finishing the Companions questline. Occasionally I'll make a witch assassin Breton named Alice or a Khajiit /swordsman named Kovu.

I've tried making multiple characters, but it annoyed me. So now I just keep my one simple character.

i make multiple characters. had 7 i think in oblivion, 3 in fo3 and new vegas, currently playing my 4th in skyrim. not counting the 3 autosaves they each only have one save. i dont keep hundreds like some people do, i simply back them up every day. very easy to find who youre looking for if theres only 4-7 saves, lol

I have 5 characters, each with 3 saves. I save every hour and quick save when I think I might die.

My favorite character is my latest: a male Nord warrior that i made for the dlc. He will become a vampire after the dlc.

Since release, I have created 18 different characters. I have not kept more than 3 at any given time. It is usually just one. I play them until one of three things happens.

1- They reach the end of their story and I retire them.
2- I just grow tired of them.
3- They die.

With the Deadly Dragons mod, I made the habit of quicksaving in the middle of battle when I get the dragons health down.. other than that, I don't usually quicksave in battle but instead after killing one enemy at a time when I'm sneaky.

If by 3, you play by hardcoe standards.. I could never do that either. In Oblivion, I never had the difficutly slider up to the max because my character simply wasn't that powerful. With Skyrim, I do tune it up to Master but I try never to let my guard down though occasionally enemies (dragons usually) break through with their quick reflexes. Really irks me when that happens.

I don't quick save in the middle of combat. For example, if I haven't saved in half an hour, I have no potions, and a dragon appears. That is when I quick save. If I just saved recently or I'm in the middle of combat I don't quick save.

Well, reason I made the habit of saving in the middle of battle at all is because I don't want to be fighting a dragon, get it down on health and then have it kill me. The mod has installed a new level of challenge into the game for me and while I do get frustrated sometimes.. it also adds to my experience. Only once did a dragon kill me when I had already gotten it halfway down.. and I was furious, though that was because it got stuck then all the sudden decided to react again.

With a few specific shouts (which I'm working on getting with my current playthrough), the fights are a lot easier but even if I let my guard down for an instant, or I can't bring it up in time, or their attack goes around my ward.. I'll be lucky if I'm not killed.

I play the game as a character study for my main, Gutslit. Otherwise, it's either me exploring new ideas, finding new ways to play that many probably wouldn't do, and tons more.

I have 5 at the moment:
One is my former main, currently on a long vacation, possibly retired.
One is dormant, got a little boring quite soon.
One hasn't left Helgen, I most likely redo her, getting her appearance right, and for RP reasons make her follow Hadvar instead if Ralof.
One is my current main and is the one who keeps a journal.
One is active but still in the beginning of his adventures.

So switching between two active characters is my play style, I guess. They do different questlines, one is a warrior and one is a mage, so basically I focus on my main and play the other when I feel like doing something different.

I've got, er. Let's see. A morally bankrupt sword and board Imperial, a Breton noblewoman who prefers to let sellswords do her dirty work, an ordinary law-abiding (mostly) Nord huntress, a Dunmer mage with a penchant for interesting plants, a hopelessly lost and confused Bosmer archer, an Argonian pacifist who frolics about Calming whatever fiercesome beasts trudge her way aaand an unarmed Khajiit thief who can't actually thieve to save his life. That's, what, seven? All I'm missing is an Orc and an Altmer. :3
