A theory about the little number of diseases in Skyrim.

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 7:41 am

Hello everybody !
So I looked at the list of the diseases in Morrowind , I was shocked by the amount of them.
Now when I looked in Skyrim list , I saw how little there are.

So I thought a little of it , and I understood the reason for that , it's really simple.
Skyrim's lands are mostly frozen , people can hardly live there , so when taking it to the diseases it makes everything much clearer.
Not all of MO's diseases can Live in Skyrim's climate !

Think of it , you can discuss if you wish.

I agree. I wish they would put more of "real life" diseases,

Skyrim has a sub-arctic climate, it would be insane to claim that it's too cold for bacteria to live there.

Sorry, but your theory doesn't really work.

Coming from a pretty cold climate myself I know there's hundereds of diseases I could catch when I walk out my door, or at least there would have been a hundered years ago.

I was disappointed by the lack of diseases in Skyrim, it had even less than Oblivion, and even Oblivion didn't have that many, I'd like to see some unique diseases as well, something like Frostbite or something..

How can people hardly live there ? Even the far North is pretty heavily populated.. Not to mention there's a far more mild climate in areas like Riften and Falkreath, as well as Whiterun.

I'm afraid the real answers simpler... no-one making the game could be bothered to put them in... it would appear that every new TES game released gets more and more "stream-lined" for consoles. Stream-lined simply meaning , cut as much out as we can get away with each time

There are different microorganisms that can survive the most hostile of environments. There are some that only live in volcanoes, however it would be rare to infect a human because humans have a much different temperature and body chemistry.

I've caught 32 in Skyrim (at least). However all mostly the same one's. Bone Break Fever (Bears), Witbane (Sabre Cats), Rockjoint (Wolves) and Ataxia (Skeevers/Traps). I think that's their names anyway

Yes there were more in Oblivion. Not a huge amount more but still more.

I'm not concerned about the lack on numbers for diseases. What bothers me is that they are barely an inconvenience, and I have to have an NPC tell me that I have one if I wasn't quick enough to read the notice during combat. The diseases should get worse as time progresses. It is similar to skooma. Skooma is nothing in this game, not that it was much in Oblivion either. Rockjoint is supposed to be fatal as Meeko's owner shows. In fact, it is nothing.

I was really disappointed at how watered down Skooma was in this game. It was so fun taking it in Oblivion and speeding about.

We really need an addiction disease for Skooma though, Withdrawal or something. That drains your fatigue by about 50 points when you're suffering from it.

This.

Your right in the sense that some of MW's diseases wouldn't be a problem in skyrims different climate, some. But skyrim should have just as many as disease that have evolved in skyrims harsh cold climate.

That's if you wanted to look at it from a real life climate perspective, but there isn't 'magic' in real life, nor can you be bit by a skeever (rat) and suddenly be less effective at picking locks.

I have no idea why skooma is so lame..

Some bandits in Skyrim mention how they think the Skooma in Skyrim is watered down. Which would explain how there's much more of it there.

talking about skooma makes me miss poor old Caius :ermm:

Its a shame there's not Corpsus about no more, you would of hoped the eruption of read mountain might have flicked a bit of the disease back up again

Watered down is putting it mildly.

More like water is Skooma'd down.. If that makes sense.

Considering there is no drinkable water in Skyrim this may well be the case.

There needs to be more, they need to be more fatal and getting worse with time. Diseases in skyrim are just mild inconveniences.

I don't like the idea of fatal diseases. Considering half the time you don't even know you have one until an NPC mentions it.
