is there any point to DPS?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 8:30 pm

lets face it, you enter a room with two or three bad guys, weapon drawn. now hang on. do i get out my .357 magnum or my .44 magnum depending on what armour theyre wearing? plus should i load my hollow points or my armour piercing? wait. should i take into consideration the guns DAM and DPS?
absolute rubbish. as long as i can head shot somebody i really dont care. just dont get me started on why on earth an enemy can take several bullets to the head and still be in a fit state to attack you. despite the DPS/DAM. absolutely pointless.

If a weapon has a low DAM and a high DPS it won't be particularly useful against heavily armored targets but if your opponents are lightly armors you can dispatch them much faster.

If a weapon has a high DAM and a low DPS you'll be able to better overcome heavy armor but your attacks are quite slow.

ust dont get me started on why on earth an enemy can take several bullets to the head and still be in a fit state to attack you.

It's an RPG, not an FPS with a realistic damage system.

As if FPS shooters ever have realistic damage systems.

Using the right weapon and ammo isnt really needed because of how bad they are balanced. Theres little reason for me to use anything but AP ammo. The time spent going into my PipBoy and changing my ammo to hollow points takes longer than just putting an extra AP bullet into an unarmored foe.

....seems realistic enough to me. Most guns with high rate of fire use small bullets with a lower velocity. I don't understand what you're confused about. btw, a 44 magnum is always going to be better than the .357. Hollow points do more damage but don't penetrate armor, this is because they fragment when they hit a solid surface, against skin this causes ripping and tearing, against armor it just bounces off. Armor piercing rounds will go straight through an opponent's armor but against unarmred it'll just go straight through. And remember, if they made it so that all enemies died from 1 headshot, it would be boring, not to mention that you would have to die from the same amount of damage. 'look a powder ganger!' BLAM dead.

That's my favorite post of the day. Great use of rectum instead of crap.

Tot he OP, it's an RPG, not an FPS. Like they said, RPG with FPS elements. Think about Final Fantasy, if I hit a non armored human with a sword that's twice the size of me, they would be dead, but they aren't. People don't complain because it's more fantasy, but NV is in the same vein with guns instead of swords, well, Lily's and Bumper Swords excluded.

Its still a waste of effort. Unarmored foes go down easily regardless of what ammo type you are using. For armored enemies though AP ammo is a must have. AP ammo is just so much more useful than HP ammo.

AP ammo is rare and expensive though. I take the time to adjust ammo to match the enemies, especially with rapid fire weapons and guns with expensive ammo. No point to waste LMG ammo on a mole rat when i can kill with a Bumper Sword :D

That's what the 2 button does, changes ammo type in your equipped weapon. Very useful and fast.

The different ammo types would make a lot more sense in a pause and play or turn based environment since most of the time you just stumble upon creatures or enemies and don't have time to necessarily change your ammo. The only time I've found it useful is on a re-load after dying.

You did it wrong, you need to keep an eye out and think tactically, this isnt the type of game where you can rush in and handle everything (AKA CoD), you have to think ahead of time, stay alert, and act fast.

What gets me is enemies that have armor on the bodies, but nothing on their head and it still take 4 shots to the head to take them down. Even with a good weapon and ammo.

I find it adds a nice bit of immersion to the situation. There are many different types and qualities of ammo anyway so it's nice to have multiple to choose from.

Makes me think about my strategy if I am in uncharted lands.

What's the difference between swapping ammo and swapping a gun?

Only a few weapons is effective enough to consider swap ammo in mist of a fight (i.e. weapon with a clip); otherwise pulling out a Laser RCW/Assault Carbine/SMG/Riot Shotgun is good enough.

yeah......alot of people will hate you for this statement. this isn't COD, this is fallout, a (borderline) RPG where DAM DPS and ammo type DO matter. you sir, are in the minority.

As a few people (IE everyone) has noted, this is an RPG not an FPS. It's actually more of an adventure-RPG game using the old-school definitions

No one complaned it took Link more than one hit to take out an octoroc when a real octopus would be calamari if you took a sword to it.

Also, AP ammo is pricy, ball is cheap. Once you have JHP though, everything else is moot, you just use ball ammo to take out mooks and switch to the good stuff for the tough baddies.

And hollowpoints are VERY worth it for tough low-armor enemies on high difficulties. A ghoul reaver is absolutely NASTY at close range, that 3x damage is great. Cazidores too are totally unarmored.

I think they did a great job mixing low-DT (cazidores, ghouls), mid-DT (anything human) and high-DT (bots and deathclaws) at every level range. My only complaint is that bots are underused compared to FO3.

lol all you have to do is push up on the d-pad, whats with all this going to pip to change ammo type? weapons with a high dps means you can get off more shots than one with a low dps.

ex: if one gun has a dps of 150 and dam of 25 it would actually do more dam than one that has a dps of 50 and a dam of 70. the first gun can get off 3 in the same amount of time the second would get off one which would come out to 75 dam (one the first gun) if you dont miss a shot. the thing is im not even good at math and i know if a gun will do more dam than another lol.

if you need another one, the anti-material rifle is over three times slower than the sniper but does around double the dam. that means if you dont miss with three shots with the sniper, you will do more dam with it in the same amount of time.

so i would say go with dam if you svck at shooting and dps if you know how to aim like myself lol...
