There's no Detect Life spell?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 7:19 pm

Please tell me I'm reading the UESP wrong. Tell me there is a detect life spell of some sort in Skyrim...

If not I might have to start the MQ and just get it over with. I've been gathering shouts, on accident mind you through quests, and I got Aura Whisper. Is this literally the only form of DL in the game?

Yes, there is. I've used it. There's also a Detect Dead version.

Either: from court wizards or Tolfdir with an Alteration skill of 40 or above, or by clearing out Treva's Watch for Stalleo.

Detect Life
Adept Alteration
Where found: College of Winterhold (Tolfdir, the guy who teaches you how to use a ward,) Riften (court wizard.)
Also a fixed quest reward for the quest "Infiltration" at Treva's watch, in the Rift.
Base magicka cost: 100 per second (channelled)
Effect: Puts an aura on living (ie, not undead, dwarf construct, or daedra) creatures. Red for hostile, blue for non-hostile.

Detect Dead is the Expert version, at a base cost of 146 per second (channelled,) and puts a blue aura on "living" Undead creatures, and a white aura on corpses.

Why the hell is it Alteration? Wtf..

IDK.. I really don't want to go into Alteration just for that 1 spell alone. And get to Expert for DD.. that's too much. Had I known this I would've prolly put more perks into it. Oh well..

The shout Aura Whisper is a useful substitute, though it lacks the identify friend/foe of Detect Life or the corpse finding of Detect Dead; on the other hand, Aura Whisper is not channelled, and can identify all creatures, even constructs and daedra.

With Mysticism gone, Alteration was the most suitable school to place it in. You don't need to sink perks into Alteration to use it; perks would just allow you to do so with greater mana efficiency.

Alteration & Illusion are the two best magic schools in my opinion. Especially for a melee build.

Conjuration is also another good magic to practice, especially for roleplaying purposes.

You can take away a mans weapons but you can't take away his ability to cast magic. Nothing better than to cast dual swords in prison (especially in Markarth where you have to deal with the forsworn inmates)

They removed Mysticism. Todd said it was "redundant".

You can get it from a quest, and gear-enchant to get the cost down.

That said, I actually agree - the detect spells affect the caster's perception and should therefore be illusion. :)
