Meridia could've easily give you something other than a sword, it wouldn't contradict her character.
Clavicus Vile too.

And the f-ing GOD OF HUNTING doesn't give you a bow?

What do hunters use, HIDES. Do Hunters make bows, no in this game BLACKSMITHS make bows.

Its established lore. These are these Daedric Lords items of power, they have been around since Morrowind.

Was. Was awesome for a mage character. Back when you could soul trap summoned creatures and Grand Souls were fairly easy to come by.

They are now functionally useless. It is faster and in the end more economical to just BUY filled Grand Soul Gems than it is to even think about using Azura's Star.

not if you hand the broken star to the elf and make it the black star, which is basically a black soul gem version of azura's star. you can then kill the lowest level humanoid character (like a level 1 bandit) and still get a grand soul, so it's VERY useful. one of my fav items in the game now

Sanguine Rose is your get out of crap free card. Useful for anybody. So is Azura's Star. Sell the others or just don't do the quests.

Sanguine Rose is actually awesome for mages who use dead thralls, i.e. give it to a dead thrall who uses staves. Now you have an extra dremora summon.
