Is there a reason why followers wont scale with player?

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 5:29 am

To me this seems a design flaw and im annoyed that most followers become really weak after few level up's. Did beth do this on purpose?, and im on a xbox so i cant use the console commands to scale the followers once they become too weak.

Is there any hope this could be fixed via patch?, in Riften there is destruction mage for hire and once he becomes too weak there is no alternative.

One simple reason: bug.

I heard console players can use the wabbajack trick to fix it.

More an oversight during the game design.

Bug is something that doesn't work as intended. There's no proof till now that Bethesda designed followers with the ability to scale accordingly to the player.

I believe it has to do with the way they are implemented.

So 'scale up' they need to be reloaded into the game.....which resets them and anything they would be carrying.....

It is not a hard fix though.....just a simple script to reload them while preserving their inventory.

Some level up, like J'zargo, but to an extent. You can try the console if you're on PC.

-Save the game
-Dismiss her/him, make sure they don't go away before you can get to them.
-Press the tilde key (~)
-Click on your follower.
-Type "disable"
-Type "enable"
-Hire the follower again.

Reading is difficult, isn't it? :)

But yea, hardly a bug but more likely an oversight. One which I don't see a reason why they shouldn't or couldn't fix in a patch.

I tought it was intentionall that they didn't level up all the way, if not they really should come with a fix cause it would be a major issue.

Anyway, if you want a follower that does level up with you for the most part, J'zargo the mage is as far as I heard the only companion that can do that.

If they're enlisted in the blades, will they completely revert to their standard status and not be a blade anymore? If so, can you re-enlist them?

I'm not sure. The only time I've seen a follower revert is when trying to resurrect them with the console.

Quite it is. Pardon my silliness.

So far I've only had Lydia as a companion. And she scales to my character's level.

There is a difference between scaling and capping. J'Zar doesn't cap. He can go up to 81. Others cap at different levels, from 25 up. I think HCs cap at 40 or 45. There was someone that posted a link to a spreadsheet that gave ALL the info on them from skills to HPs to level caps. I cannot for the life of me find it.

Still, them being set is an oversight. And I agree it should be changed.

Here's some basic info on followers. I also included the link, which lists more info, and also a link to a Google excel-type spreadsheet.

A follower's skills, health, and other stats are set when they are first created (which is typically when you enter their starting cell, become a Thane, and so on) and never improve from that point, outside of a handful of special cases. Each follower has a maximum level (which varies for each), and a specific set of favored skills, which are dictated by their http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Classes.

This also explains why, when you give a follower a certain type weapon, they may/may not use it, or at least not as often as you like.
