Things to do besides quests?

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 11:50 am

I often find myself not knowing what to do next in Skyrim. I don't want to rush through the quests so Im always searching for activities besides that. Here you can list all the things you do in Skyrim besides quests.
Here are the obvious things, for a start:
  • Hunting: Even the Dovahkiin needs some time off his fate and responsibilities. I tend to use hunting as the main leisure activity for my characters, because its relaxing and you get to see beautiful environment and explore the world at the same time.
  • Dungeon Diving: Going into caves to collect mushrooms, or graverobbing an ancient nordic ruin...
  • Collecting: For example, my character collects sweetrolls and bones ...
  • Decorating my house(s): Because it gives me a kind of visual feedback on my achievements.
Apart from that, do you have any other creative ideas on what to do in Skyrim?

I mainly explore. Just see what I can find, even though I've found a hell of a lot of locations in the world.

Take a swim, go for a walk, camping, fishing, relaxing in hotpools. Of course everything with Raksha's four friends.

I have some screenshots of these activities, link for them is in my signature.

Roleplay. Create a personality, a life for your character. Make the decisions they'd make, as opposed to the decisions you want to make. Be someone specific, and tell their story through the game.

It extends the longevity of the game infinitely. I could easily spend hundreds of hours with my character, catching up with his friends and visiting his favorite spots in Skyrim.

Hiking, irritating rabbits, chasing foxes, shouting at butterflys, arguing with Marcurio. Thats pretty much my downtime right there, I count dungeon diving as questing personally.

Read. Shop. Try out different outfits. Go to the pub, listen to the bard, talk with people and have a few drinks. Cook. Investigate houses (with or without stealing things).

Messing around: Save and try who who can FUS without getting a bounty. Stalk people. Walk around naked and see what comments you get. :P

After I read this thread one thing hit me.... If these are things to do besides quests I must be special as I do these things as my primary way of playing and quests is more of a secondary thing.

One of my characters just plain explores--follows every path, doesn't worry about breaking quests by entering a dungeon too early, since he doesn't do quests. One is researching the various gods and daedra, reading and visiting shrines, temples, and other places associated with religion and/or cults. One is studying the government and history.

I still come across new things or discover hidden chests I never found before on my previous playthroughs and I'm on maybe my 7th character in total. Yesterday I found a location and 3 spiders (1 of them was dead when it fell) lowered out of the trees and attacked me.

My character collects all flawless gems and many books.
