Things We Desperately Want out of Skyrim (and Proposed Ways

Post » Tue Jul 03, 2012 4:14 pm

It's no secret that all of the Skyrim fans out there have a couple wants and needs out of their respective gaming experience. Whether it be something gameplay-oriented we think needs seriously adjusted, or in-game material or content that you'd like to see implemented... let's talk about it, and how'd you'd have it done.

The first two I will bring up are fairly common complaints, so we'll knock those two out of the way (they are also console-specific, so no "Use a Mod" fixes can apply)...
  • Improved Destruction Magic Damage
?I'm playing several Level 81 characters right now, two of which have maxed out the Destruction Tree. I have a Pure Mage High-Elf, and Spellsword-y Vampire Dark Elf. In both cases, even with appropriate perks and solid enchantments; Destruction Magic feels so weak. The only reason my Mage can even compete against enemies is the fact that Dual-Casting insta-staggers anything, giving you the time needed to keep battering them down with multiple spells (Thunderbolts, In my case). But the Spellsword might as well just become a one-handed swordsman, because Icicle Spears and Walls of Frost are little more than mosquito bites, even to standard humanoid enemies like Dawnguard Footmen (this is me playing Expert, for reference). I also realize you can craft Destruction Magic potions (and have done so in the past), but not all characters put points into Alchemy... and plus, its kind of annoying that I have to drink a potion to actually be good at something I invested 10+ perks into.

My proposed fix is simple; add scaling damage values into the "Novice --> Master Destruction" perks in the Perk Tree, similar to the One-Handed or Two-Handed trees with Armsman and Barbarian, but broken up into the five different perks instead of having one that upgrades multiple times. Each individual perk could provide a 20% boost, maxing out at 80% damage like the weapon tress (or you could go as low as 10% per perk, so that only a 50% upgrade is available). Mages need to be able to use their spells as stand-alone weapons with little support to be effective... otherwise, why play as a Pure Mage at all?
  • Level Re-Speccing
Level Re-Speccing has been a big point on contention within the community, with most being wholly for it and others speaking out against it on the principle of embracing the realism of making mistakes within the realm of the RPG. While I do respect that level of thought, there is no doubt about it that respeccing is a major aspect of modern RPGs nowadays, and overall makes the gaming experience much less stressful. For example, I have had recreate two or three of my characters multiple times to ensure I had the appropriate Perks lined up for my top-tier builds. Its made me sink more hours into the game doing menial tasks, rather than enjoying the full breadth and scope of the game while enjoying my toons. I think if we could find an Lore-friendly way of allowing characters to respec that had some form of consequence behind it, maybe people wouldn't mind the option being available.

My idea for this would be to implement some form of Side-Quest when a characters reaches a specific level, one at which would make sense for them needing to Respec (around level 20 seems appropriate). For the purpose of the story behind it, the character must also have completed the (MINOR SPOILERS) Western Watchtower Quest in Whiterun, to begin spawning dragons in the world (/MINOR SPOILERS). At this time, they could receive a mysterious note from a courier or something relating to a long-lost temple in a cave. Upon discovering said area, the player finds an ancient, magical altar erected in the center of the space. It turns out that it has been standing since the days of the Dragon Wars, and was a place where Dragon Priests used to hold rituals and pray to their Dragonic Overlords.

In short, when the Dragonborn uses this artifact, he may choose to have his character respecced. BUT, in order to do so, he must pay this altar with Dragon Souls that he has consumed from battling Dragons across Skyrim. 10 Souls sounds like a good number to me, because for 10 Souls, the player would have learned Three Shouts fully and started with 1 point on a Fourth, so it does have an impact on their progression. For Higher-Level players with many Dragon Souls built up, it allows them to freely make changes as they wish... or, if they do not have enough souls, embark on lore-friendly quests to hunt down dragons and slay them for the resource. Plus, it could add some fun new history behind the Dragon Cultists and their Religion, seeing as we aren't exposed to much of that throughout the game.

Those are a few I can think of that need addressing. What about you guys?

"We" do not necessarily want re-speccing. I certainly don't - I'm not too lazy to play through again. Perhaps you might want to change the title to thinks "I" want. Although, to be fair, I kinda agree over Destruction.

If we're going to allow exchanging all of your perks on a whim, we might as well just stop calling this game an RPG because the perks are pretty much all that's left of the roleplaying game elements in Skyrim. I wouldn't even support it being a special one-time thing for a quest or something because it doesn't really make any logical sense (then again, nothing in Skyrim really does).

The scaled Destruction magic is such an easy thing to fix, there's already a ton of mods out there that do it. It's been so widely demanded around here that I really don't see why Beth wouldn't include it in an update or something.

I did mention that some of the community is not in favor of this idea, if you would have read fully. There is no reason to be snotty about this... it's supposed to be a thread for everyone to propose ideas. I even said this is what I'D like to see, then opened the floor up at the end of the post. Reeelax.

Besides, if you don't want to respec, then don't. Not everyone has the time to do full play-overs.

I don't want perks respec, but thats just an ideological approach, I wouldn't bother if Beth ever decide to please those who want it... specially when its totally optional... what is not true with the stage4 vampirism changes(as far as I know).

I can't even begin to think of what to say over the very IDEA of re-speccing, the whole thing gets me enraged, and I simply hate the idea so much, that if bethesda adds it in the next game, I won't buy it. I don't care if it's even an OPTION. We'll all end up getting tempted to use it at least once and have the game absolutely ruined for us.
