Things Honest Hearts has taught me

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:49 am

These things are now official. There's really no turning back at this point, I don't think.

1) New Vegas hates Energy Weapons and explosives. Good luck convincing the caravan to let you bring your rocket launcher and good luck bringing enough energy weapon ammo to last the whole trip. (with hardcoe mode, at least)

2) New Vegas hates Caesar's Legion. You'd think that with Joshua Graham being a former Legate for the Legion, this option would be very possible. You'd think that when you first meet Graham and he gives you a quest, you'd get "Optional: Double-cross Joshua Graham by meeting with the leader of the White Legs." Nah, doesn't happen. :c

3) The Sorrows are friggin' EMO. You think it's just the name? Nah, it's everything about them. Their endings and their companion. I want the guy with the adorable baseball cap back.

I'm not even an EW, explosives or a Caesar's Legion kind of player, but even I can see that it's quite clear that those groups suffered in this DLC. While none of that affects me, I thought games like this were about choice, and I see none for those groups.

I was expecting the carry limit to be dependent on the player's own strength.

Having a set number for players, regardless of their STR, kind of defeats the purpose of having extra strength to tolerate a rocket launcher or the like... The DLC is basically flipping Anabelle the bird.
I agree it's more realistic that way; it'd be stupid if the game had a caravan with people using miniguns and rocket launchers. And yet, at the same time, EW and explosives have YET to find their place in New Vegas You have to really learn all the Microfusion cell merchants if you even hope to have a decent supply of ammo and explosives aren't often very effective; I mean it shouldn't take more than 2 rockets to kill an enemy. Guns and Unarmed are the superior forms of combat in EVERY New Vegas instance and in EVERY DLC thus far. I'm sure the Big Empty will come as a relief to EW players, but I guess my point is... It's one thing to stress the importance of guns, it's another thing to blatantly forbid the other types, which the carry limit basically did, since Microfusion cells and rocket launchers are heavy.

And as for Caesar's Legion....well yeah. I'm sure this was the DLC they were looking for. Caesar's Legion is evil and they're definitely not the canon winners of the Second Battle of Hoover Dam, ok we get it. However, why the HELL can't you double-cross Graham in a way that a quest line supports? Sure, you can just kill him in the name of Caesar, but wtf kinda defeats the purpose of the DLC if you just walk in, kill the dude and walk right out.

i'm betting that big empty will bring forth gobs of energy weapon madness.

yet it'll be ruined because they'll introduce som uber pellet gun and melee weapon that outclasses the others.

i want a laser minigun with breeder cells!

This DLC doesn't really lend itself to energy weapons, being about a tribal war and all. Also as far as I can tell Old World Blues is all about energy weapons and tech so it seems balanced to me in that regard (I don't use explosives so no comment). I will agree that the legion got screwed over (again) and they should have made it an option to double cross him, on my brothers Legion file we spent an hour trying to see if that was an option because as an agent of Ceasar it seemed so natural, but that's just my opinion.

Its true, energy weapons are def in the minority since theres not many and most of them svck. If old world blues doesnt have a giant pile of good energy weapons ill be shocked.

Like I said though:

It's one thing to stress the importance and superiority of one skill, it's another thing to completely forbid all others.

Mothership Zeta stressed the importance of energy weapons, but you could still complete it with guns or melee, and those two were given their space to work with.
Dead Money stressed the importance of sneak, but you could complete it through other various means, all of which were given room to work with.
Honest Hearts stresses the importance of guns and survival and working with Joshua Graham, and [censored] all who try anything else.

Yeah, and the type of player that takes "Strong Back" is going to laugh at the allowed weight increase they recieve. It's nothing. It's not even enough to cover ONE weapon that a person would get Strong Back FOR in order to be able to carry that weapon around the Mojave.

Don't get me wrong. I think the location, the scenery and the tribes are wonderful. Very immersive, very realistic. I mean, it is realistic that a character that's used to computer terminals and medicine would die here. It's VERY nice for the specific type of character it's meant for. But the story isn't immersive since I practically have no choice, the Legion got screwed over on this DLC when it would've been SO simple to give them content for this, and a simple increase in allowed carry weight would've left the Explosives and Energy weapons players a lot happier. It's a very specialized DLC aimed towards a very specific playing style, which I must admit that I think, for an RPG, is not the way to go.

They did add a new energy weapon called the Compliance Regulator that causes paralysis on criticals and uses energy cells.

I do agree with you to some degree, but at the same time I went in with my laser RCW and about 500 charge packs and had no problems. Even with a guns skill of 7 I still enjoyed trying out the new guns as well. Now if there were no option to bring in our own guns then I would totally agree with you, there's no way in hell I could kill a giant cazador with the guns that are available, or the compliance regulator for that matter. So basically I guess the fact you can bring your own weapons is the justification for the lack of weapon variety.

Explosives not good enough? My Frag grenades do 262 DAM and Annabelle with HE missles does ridiculous damage.

Energy weapons are really scarce, I'll admit that, as is the ammo, but they are really freaking good. I don't think you guys are taking the right perks or something.

hmmm I took 2 energy weapons with me, the holorifle and a lazer pistol.

The holorifle tore up pretty much everything. On most whitelegs if sneak attack insta kill. actually turned a few to dust. the weight limit is a bummer though, oh btw I usually just made my own ammo.

Exactly, I dont like the Legion, but i can't stand this kind of treatment of those who joined or partook in what Obsidian was so proud to call a viable option.

If you get your skill high enough and get the perks for it then EW are awesome. I hope OWB has a good amount of energy weapons because I could use another good laser rifle like AER14 Prototype.Explosives I have not tried yet but maybe I will in the future. Also if you get on the BoS good side you have a constant supply of ammo for energy weapons.

The OP is not saying that energy weapons (or explosives for that matter) are bad, just that they are represented poorly in HH.

1) New Vegas hates Energy Weapons and explosives.

Especially before they were patched. To quote Yahtzee's CoD4 review, "it's a gun [censored]". And disappointing gun [censored] at that. With not enough enemies to [censored] the guns at :hehe:
