Think I'm about burned out.

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 2:14 am

Not surprising I guess considering the criminal amount of hours I've put into this game.
So what prompted this, well my character is standing in a small mining settlement staring across the volcanic tundra at a dragon that's flying in circles, almost close enough for an arrow, but I can't even be bothered to draw the bow.

This is not a complaint because I've had more than my money's worth out of this game, my question to those who also feel they have burned out, when did you realize, what event made you stop and think?

You can't access these forums with a PS3 or an XBox 360, so there is a pretty big chance to guess the PC player.

The OP is also a PC player according to his or her posts.

Seeing how the game was made for the 360 and MOST of the sales come from the 360, it's a good bet alot of people play on the 360 and to a lesser extent the PS3. Also you can be on the PS3 and surf the internet.

As for me, I played alot as well. Didn't acomplish much quest wise, but played over 40 hours I guess. I stopped playing because I get dizzy playig it too long so never played since Christmas. Have the itch to play Skryim again soon, but wife home now, so don't have access to my TV.

Btw, I am a 360 player. :P

I've got a number of mods, but the mods that will extend this game for me will not appear until after the CK is released, things like difficulty mods are not much use to me because I prefer an interactive world to keep my attention rather than prolonged battles.

Wait, what?, when did this become a platform discussion?
It's about the "game", you know, the same game that's on all platforms.

It's not a shame to get bored of Skyrim ;) I am about to take a break and move to another game. It makes no sense to play just because it has become routine, right? I am sure lots of us kind of move their mouse over the Steam-screen on an automatic pilot, starting up Skyrim like they can't do otherwise ;)

Stop for a while. And yeah, I had my moments already. Got in a difficult dungeon, got killed over and over again and I just walked out... Then, when spiders approached me, I used a shout to let them walk away. I got tired of killing stuff. It was the 'warning sign' for me. If you don't want to kill, please stop...

I'm in the same boat, if you're PC you can utilize mods to give yourself a different perspective.

I just have to wait for DLC.

Coming to the forums and reading/posting does give me a little incentive to go try some things, which is probably why you're here.

I spend alot (OMG NOT A WORD) of time screwing around, seeing how many dragons I can kite into a town....pickpocketing equipment and dropping poisons into their inventories... creating a lightning storm... wolfing out... just generally causing mayhem.

If mods aren't your thing, go create some chaos. Really fun.

Running Bare, I entirely agree with you, feeling the same way.

After playing WoW for almost 5 years, I suddenly quit last May, having nothing left to do but raise my relationships with the other factions. Granted, I would get better gear, but it was so BORING. 10 level 80s, 5 level 85s, 5 more going for 85, etc., etc.

I then started in Rift - which was a great game - but I was happy to see Sky released in November, so I could quit Rift - same reason as WoW. Same darn grind. I realize MMOs are time-sinks, but it got old toward the end.

I just couldn't do that same grind every day - after having done it for 5 years.

And then recently, I started to have similar feelings about Sky. I was playing one character exclusively - an assassin/bow user. So, I quickly built a pure mage, and a warrior.

I rotate the 3, playing a different one every day. I find, with things slowing down - different quest lines, different dungeon crawling - that I'm able to maintain my interest. One is doing the Dark Brotherhood, another is doing the Thief's Guild; the last one finished the Mage Guild quest. I know eventually they'll do the same quests, but I hope to delay this as long as possible.

I still hope I can last long enough till D3 is released.

Good luck.

You need a holiday.
I have heard rumors of an island to the north of Vvardenfell named Solstheim. There is apparently an Imperial fort there named Fort Frostmoth.
I have been told there is now a boat in Khuul that offers transport to the island of Solstheim.

For me it's when the little inconsistencies start to annoy, such as being able to one shot a whole dunegeon of bandits, then getting one-shotted myself by the bandit chief.

In the beginning that was fun, after alot of play it's tiresome. Same kind of experience i've had with all TES, and a signal it's time to avoid them for a bit...good thing I have Dark Souls to help me rip out my hair while i'm on Skyrim hiatus.

Do you roleplay OP? I'm just about done with the guy in my sig, and I already have two characters lined up, one of them with a full background story already written, and ready to begin his adventures. I'm just as excited playing Skyrim now as I was on 11/11/11.

I'm in the same boat. The game really started to get boring now that NOTHING can challenge me. I have maxed my armor, weapon and magic resistance through smithing, enchanting and alchemy. I haven't even finished the main quest or many other quests. It's just no challenge at this point and feels like I'm going through the motions.

I'm not sure he meant difficulty, but maybe.

Even fully exploited and min/maxed... on Master there is some degree of difficulty. I've poured so many hours into Skyrim that I've done just about everything, saving a few dungeons for days when I'm bored, but with all 25 + sidequests done, Civil War, Main Quest, Daedric quests, houses, horses, weapons, armor, potions, books, etc...

I just played the damned game too much, should've slowed it down a bit, but the hype built around this game almost made it a narcotic for me.

There's still plenty to do, but its all sight seeing, sub archetype character builds and Radiant stuff now... luckily we have expansions/DLC to look forward too.

*EDIT*

At a combined 450 hours on 3 characters, I definitely got my money's worth. It was fun, and still is... but like others said its time to put it down for a little bit and go explore other worlds.

Sort of the same boat. I've only experience maybe half the game though. The reason I'm burnt out is because I cannot progress any further in the civil war due to a glitch (can't report for duty ps3version, Eastmarch imperial camp). I've tried so many things over a few days that I burnt myself out just doing that. Makes me so annoyed at the game that I don't even want to play. I just can't accept moving on and doing other quests, abandoning all my progress on the quest line because of a bug. I paid for the damn game, I should be able experience all its content. I don't know, maybe it's just me.

Not to derail the thread, but is the mobile in combat?

I had the same issue in the Civil War questline (on PS3), but it was normally due to a dragon nearby. Look for a dragon or some other fiend, if that is the issue, and dispatch him to continue the quest.

Good luck.

*EDIT*

Gah, so many afterthoughts when drinking. Most quest mobs will not respond when in combat or if a threat is in thier vicinity.

I just burned out about 20 minutes ago when I realized that using alchemy enchanting and smithing to the top degree basically makes the game easy mode, even on Master difficulty.

No threats. I try to speak to Rikke and the option to report won't come up. I've reloaded many times; once a dragon attacked but it didn't work before, during, or after the attack. I've been at it for days running different ways to make it work with no success. Effectively, ruined my experience making me not want to play at all.

I think I'm at the same place as well, I have played Skyrim for a huge amount of time. It's about 200 hours - and that's a lot for me. I wouldn't really consider myself a person who spends a lot of time playing games (usually) but when I got this game, just couldn't put the thing down! Usually I get bored of a game very quickly. That 200 hours is about two play throughs, but not completing everything in both. Played slightly different ways, mage in one playthrough, more of a one handed/light armor in the other.

A couple things made me get bored of the game:

- I accidently deleted a save I had which made me restart the game (my own dumb fault).
- I really enjoy walking through the land, but not so much crawling through dungeons again and again. After restarting and doing a new play through, just couldn't bring myself to going through the larger dungeons again. Did help having the dungeons look pretty different though.
- The story line, although interesting, was a bit hard to get my head around at first.
- Some quests intersect with each other, it made me worried I was going to break a quest sometimes because of something else I had done.
- After a while the voice acting got tedious. Same lines nearly all the time.
- I didn't feel particularly satisfied when completing the civil war quest, or main quest.
- For me, no real attachment to any characters. Closest to me in this was with Paarthurnax - I really liked that character.

What I really liked:

- The roaming nature of the game. My first run through, I didn't even do the main quests, just explored. But then I realized this may break quests. I sometimes picked up objects I couldn't put down which got annoying.
- The scenery, both nature and buildings.
- The Dragons.
- The weather effects. An overcast day actually made me feel like an overcast day feels like in real life.
- Sovngarde. That place was really awesome.
- Odahviing was cool.
- The bow and arrow, loved the archery.

And yep, tried a couple of the mods, but do think you would have to wait until the CK comes out before things get really interesting with the mods.

Sorry, digressed a little bit! The things above kinda explain why I got bored of it though.

To answer the original question - I got bored when I started just messing about. Like another poster, would change into a Werewolf and go nuts killing people. Or when I had a mission to go into a dungeon I had been in before (from a previous play through) - just didn't want to. Definitely feel sorry for the people having major problems with the game, I haven't had major ones (except crashing), but saying that, I did get worried with quests affecting other quests if I didn't do something in the right order.

I reckon the money was well spent for me, made me a little bit reclusive over the last month though!

There's a lot to love about Skyrim, but you can't play it forever. I have no real complaints. I've more than got my money's worth and eagerly await DLC. I'll probably hit the 400-hour mark before I take a lengthy break. It's just a fun, immersive RPG. I like to turn off the music and UI, and quest markers and just stroll around. And when I do quit, I'll do it without really exploring the magic system as much as I wanted.

A few things that bug me ...

- Dying NPCs. I return to Riverwood after a quest. The town is being attacked by an elder dragon, and I have to run inside to get my bow. By the time I come back, Alvor, Sigrid and Camilla are dead. Later. I return to a mine I've cleared of spiders. The workers are happily working away, but now the spiders have respawned. The bloodbath begins. The same goes for another mine near Markath. Forsworn have respawned and murdered the people I cleared the area for. Eventually, I'll be left with only kids and dogs roaming the wilderness. I'm all for dying NPCs, but eventually it's a bit much.

- Linear dungeons. Skyrim contains the best dungeons in the series, but that isn't saying much. An RPG is only as good as its dungeons. They all look very similar and are stocked with a limited variety of bad guys. I can only spend so much time snagging 3g out of burial urns before I start to lose my mind. The micro-stories in each one are what keep them interesting. There's always some piece of lore, quest or treasure that makes a place unique. But rarely do I find myself doing more than butchering dreugr or flipping a few switches. Good dungeon designers are mean misfit sadists. I feel coddled.

- Weird progression. The strange, tiered progression of levels, perks and gear just doesn't work for me. I'd have to go in-depth to explain it all, but I think they over thought it.

- Short, uninspired major quest lines. I won't go into detail for fear of spoilers.

After the main quest, the guild quests, and the daedric quests, nothing really seemed to matter. It was fun sometimes doing random things for people, and dungeon crawling for word walls. After doing about 4-5 wall in a row since I had nothing else to do, I got bored.

If we had major/minor skills, or had mage/thief/warrior/maybe other standing stones slow down or stop the growth of skills while raising the rate of its own, that might make me actually try to play a class instead of an overpowered killing machine. At least that way you would HAVE to try to do things in new ways, which could keep the game fresh.

I think I am too right now.

I'm at a little over 130 hours on a level 59 character, and theres still a good amount of the map that I haven't even explored yet. I ramped up the difficulty from adept to expert and I'm noticing a slight rise in difficulty but nothing I can't handle. Still pretty easy. That being said, I think it'll be better if I put the game down for a while, play/do something else and then come back to it when im ready for more. Sometimes I feel like im making myself play the game because I love it so much and I want to get through all the content (and I also want to play again with at least another character or 2) so maybe that's whats making me feel like this.
