Thinking of getting Skyrim for PC, few questions

Post » Thu Jul 12, 2012 5:02 pm

I bought Skyrim when it came out for the PS3, but the various bugs of the game combined with several things that annoyed me made me stop playing it. I recently built a nice gaming PC though, and was thinking since the game has been out for a while a lot of the bugs might have been fixed and some mods may be out to fix some of the issues I was having.

Not including graphics mods, what mods do you think are the best and improve the game the most? My biggest gripes with the game were the extremely repetitive dialogue, non-killable npcs, and relatively short questlines and biggest of all the lack of NPC recognition from accomplishments and change in events. For example people talking about the war between Stormcloaks and Empire when one of them was already defeated earlier in the game.

Have most of the bugs with the game been fixed?

Anything else I should know about the PC version of the game? I've never played a Bethesda game on PC before.

It has mods for everything from book pages to new beer bottles, and I haven't personally encountered any major bugs.
Bethesda games don't change a whole lot on the PC save for better graphics/mods and the console. (which is extremely useful, given that you can fix plenty of bugs with it)

The game is just as bugged, but you can use the unofficial Skyrim patch. The game is pretty much the same thing as the console version otherwise.

I personaly haven't had any problems with the PC version of Skyrim. I'm sure there are some bugs but I haven't had any problems with quests or anything. Even 'blood on the ice' (wich alot of people apparently had problems with) worked fine for me.

The thing about PC gaming, is that if there's an annoyance bothering you, there's probably a mod for it. If not, jump over to the mod communities and start requesting one. I've found the PC gaming community to be far more, well, communal. We tend to support each other a lot, and having mod developers really facilitates that.

There's tons of fixes in the unofficial patches, not that i had any issues anyways, which fix tons of little things that could potentially bother you.

Thanks everyone for the responses, one more question. What site is considered the best for downloading mods from?

Nah, not until they actually get their installer out of beta (if they ever do and at this rate I doubt they will) Cursed has an installer/mod manager that works just fine also. The Steam Workshop works great also. Out of the three, Nexus is at the bottom if you are using their never out out of beta mod manager. (at least you can install/uninstall them manually from Nexus so that is a plus)

Also don't forget that PC has a load of console commannds that can get you out of any jam you may find yourself in.

Well managing mods has come a very long way since the old school days of manually backing up files then installing. It is such a breeze now :D

But it's nice having that old-school experience, just in case.

PC is really the only way to go for elder scrolls games in my opinion (for example if you're a huge fan of Morrowind, the graphics have been consistantly updated through the modding community to the point where they look better than oblivion...). If you have a problem with something, there is most likely a mod for it.

I personally have not encountered any bugs with vanilla Skyrim, however you should be warned that too many mods can inflict bugs on you, especailly mods that do not work well together; you will often encounter things like texture glitches, holes, and odd AI behavior.

Since you say you have never played a bethesda game on pc before, I would suggest you stick to the Steam Workshop for mods for the time being, until you can learn how to manually install mods and how to troubleshoot conflicts. I would suggest BOSS for Skyrim as well; it is a mod sorting software that will help put mods in a load order with as few conflicts as it can, and it is constantly updated so it will give you constant feedback on what mods are out of date or conflict with eachother.

I wish you the best of luck with your new adventure; take it from a console player, when I went to the PC for Morrowind and Oblivon, I could never go back. :D

Workshop is great in theory.... note: in theory communisim works.

Although it might work well for some people, it also causes a hell of alot of problems and is a real bastard to deal with. Well, that my opinion anyway.

I personaly love using Nexus, and I have used it ever since it went active.
The only problem I have with nexus is that recently I've been unable to upload anything bigger than 500kb... >_<

Will be a big help. I have used NMM and had no issues at all. Beta or not. It works fine. I don't used the "Download With Manager" feature as I like to download to a library folder and open the mod to see what it adds and pick what I want it to do. Then use the NMM to keep track of it all.
