Thinking of switching over to PC

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 9:25 pm

Hi All,

So I have been a massive console gamer most of my life, mostly playing FPS and RPG's.

However, getting older and having more responsibilities has meant I have less time to play. And with DICE's new patch, that has in my opinion ruined BF3, means that the only game I am going to play on my xbox now is Skyrim. So. Why not go over to PC where I can then create my own content and download all the amazing mods that the awesome TES community creates AND still be able to use my xbox controller(keyboard and mouse are foreign to me).

My question:

How mush will a PC that will run Skyrim and its mods cost?

Quite an ambiguous question but a rough estimate would be really helpful. THANKS!

You dont need a 1000£$€ pc to run skyrim you could build a £350 one which would run it well (like i just have done to sell)

Mods are free which modders kindly give their time in making them. You can donate to some though if you want. Tbh from all the mods that have been released bethesda will really have to step its game up if it will match them for dlc.

You can easily use a xbox controller btw, just use the charging cable for wired but you'll need a wireless adapter for wireless.

You should be able to do a pretty good set up for around $1200, provided that you buy an oem OS, and spend next to nothing on the case.
Cpu: 300
gpu: 250
Ram: 100
Disk: 200
Mobo: 200
OS: 150 to 200.

You could shave few hundred dollars more by going amd instead of intel, but they are only good for about a year.

Cool thanks everyone.

I have just been over to Nexus, and boy! I have been missing some serious stuff, some of the weapons, armour, cloaks, companion commands. Vanilla Skyrim just doesn't cut it. Defo getting a PC.

Yes that is a bit over priced, The cpu at $300 would put you in the i7 2600 range and that is over powered and a waste of money for gaming. An i5 2500k is much better value for money and you will see no difference in playing games, that alone will save you $100

The OS is only $99 so that's another $50 - 100 saved there

8 GB of Corsair RAM will cost $49.99 for which is more than enough another $50 saved there. These are a few example of how your build is over the top, I got these prices from Newegg

@ The OP I recommend you build yourself and re use any old mouse and keyboard as accessories because they will be fine

Yeah also look at the WATER, Moonpath to Elsewyr, Sleeping Tree Sanctuary and Sky UI mods as examples of amazing work by the community

What PC do you have now?

If you have a regular size case and an decent CPU, you could do it for cheap.

Start>Computer>System Properties>

-What is your Operating System "Windows Edition" [on top] and type 32bit/64bit?
-What Processor?
-How much Installed Memory [RAM]?

Then on the top left of the window click "Device Manager" and then in that window hit the + on "Display adapters" and give what that says.

If things are decent enough, you might not need to spend much at all.

I currently have an old laptop! lol. It serves for most work purposes as I use email and internet only at home really.

I have been thinking about getting a PC for some time I have a great sound system and monitor for my xbox. So all I need to do is buy a PC, keyboard, mouse and skyrim then set it up in my gaming room. I should be getting some money, enough to buy a PC I need. I will also ask my friend to build me it.

My main reason for wanting mods is to recreate the character from my novel. I would like an awesome ranger armour, a mod that shows all your equipped weapons at once (eg. the shortsword, sword and bow/arrows that I will have equipped), this http://www.entertainmentearth.com/images/%5CAUTOIMAGES%5CUC1264lg.jpg as the shortsword and this http://www.raven-armoury.co.uk/gifs/Galleries/splitscabgallery.htm as the longsword. With the previous in an underarm baldric. Which I suspect will be a "donation".

Really? I am in the UK and that is not the case

Games here are £29.99 which converts to $47 Aus dollars. I have heard in Australlia they are 2x that

This would be your best bet. I would always recommend a Quad core if you can afford it. It means you won't be upgrading cpu for a long time, which will save you money in the long run. I'm still using Core 2 quad and having no issues what so ever with modern games.

I was talking about Computer parts. VATS in europe for electronics are the highest in the world.

And with DICE's new patch, that has in my opinion ruined BF3

I've never played the BF franchise but I'm curious, why did the "patch" in your opinion ruined BF3?

Worst here in Australia are Motor vehicles & Software. Software cost 1.8x the amount they do in the US, and the IT industry blames the GST which only happens to be 10%. Seriously I doubt programmers can do any calculations of their own.

Not sure if its ok to discuss here but the new patch was massive! And it changed nearly all the game dynamics. But the biggest issues I have is with suppression. Essentially if someone shoots at you first, your bullets (even if you had the reticule on their head) would then fire with massive deviation. It turned the game into a parody. Also, they made the suppressors (not to be confused with suppression) awful. And they weren't that hot to begin with. Also made tanks out of paper now, made the heli's even more twitchy (again weren't that great to begin with), they also made it impossible to shoot down jets (again they were demi-god like to begin with).

And I am not a noob. I have a SPM of nearly 600 (before patch) and a K/D of 3.25. I also play on my own. Still not a bad stat to retire on. Bring on Skyrim PC MODS!

That's a shame. Is it just me or the patches nowadays are ruining the games more than they're fixing it? Pssssst... is the other way devs.

Make sure you buy a good "mid-range gaming PC". And select the components yourself. Usually webshops are cheaper than "real" shops. E.g. most americans seem to like Newegg.com. Although Microcenter has sweet deals on cpus+motherboards.

For a good gaming PC, get a good CPU. i5-2500k was the cpu to get during the last year. Now it's the i5-3570K. Around $220. Get a Z77 motherboard (Asus, ASRock, Gigabyte, or another of the known brands). Should cost $100. Get 8GB of RAM, but not more. Costs $40. Then a good videocard. At the moment, the nVidia cards do better at Skyrim than AMD cards. The gtx560ti (note the "ti") is the most recommended gaming videocard. Note, nvidia is releasing new cards soon. You might wanna check out a gtx660 or gtx670 if they get released. A gtx560ti is around $200 in the US, I think.

That's the basis for your PC. CPU+mobo+ram+videocard. Total of under $600.

Then you need the rest. These are components that don't have much impact on your gaming experience. Sometimes you wanna pick something cheap, sometimes you wanna spend a little more money. Just to give you an idea.
PSU (power supply) - between $30 and $60. Cheap brands can give more problems in the future. Make sure you have enough watts.
Case - esthetics mostly. So many choices. Between $30 and $80.
HDD - 1 TB gives you more than enough. $90.
SSD - Having an SSD will make your PC feel more "snappy". Only has impact on loading times in Skyrim. Not necessary unless you wanna spend a little extra.
DVD player. $20. You probably wanna install a game from DVD sometime. Or burn a CD maybe.
Monitor. You already got one. Good. Otherwise they cost ~ $150-$200 for a nice 23" 1080p screen.

PSU, case, HDD, DVD, that is another $200.

You also need an Operating System. Costly. If you happen to have a Windows install-CD from an old PC around, you could carry it over. I would normally recommend Win7. But if you happen to have an old WinXP, that will run Skyrim fine.
A keyboard and mouse. Many different prices. Depends on your personal preferences.
Assembly. Some webshops will assemble your PC for a little extra money. Or you could do it yourself. It's not that hard anymore.

So total price for the core system would be around $800 for the components.
Might seems expensive, just to play Skyrim. But with this PC, you can play any game you want. And other many other things you can't do on a console.
