It's not a MMO like World of Warcraft. And it's not an open world sandbox game.

It's more like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Team Fortress, Halo and Crysis.

Not an MMO. Just read this and you will have all your questions answered since it seems you have no idea what this game is lol.

Brink supports 8v8 multiplayer, 8 person co-operative play, and single player. It isn't an MMO.

If you've played Halo: Reach, you'll understand what I refer to when I say it's my humble opinion that Brink's multiplayer will resemble a far mode detailed, two-sided version of Invasion.

In Reach's Invasion, one team of 6 players is on offense, the other on defense. The job of the offense is to complete 3 sequentially-phased objectives (the only objectives being: spend X amount of time in a hill [anologous to hacking a terminal], delivering a data module to a certain loaction [escorting the VIP], or plant a bomb in a particular location [plant an HE charge]); the defense (also a team of 6) only has stop them. The objectives can be set identical to other phases (two hill phases and one data module phase, for example).

In Brink, both teams will have multiple offensive and defensive-oriented objectives. Your specific role in Brink will be defined by your class in both how you play and in what objectives you complete. It is done in teams of 8, with AI serving as fill-ins if you are playing solo or co-op, or if players leave/quit in multiplayer.

I enjoy Invasion, but I am sure Brink will do better at the same job.

Long story short, it's not an MMO, it's still a FPS. Just not a "classic" one.

Before I start, I should make clear that there are two campaigns (one for Resistance, one for Security). They play on the same maps, but with different objectives.

You can play Brink one of three ways.

First is your standard single player campaign: except for you, every character you see is an AI, friendly or not. There are 16 total characters playing, 8 on each side, of which you are one.

Then there is co-op campaign, you can have friends playing along with you. If you don't have seven friends, the game automatically fills in however many AI make your team add up to 8, and all 8 enemies are AI.

Now, in competitive multiplayer, you can play a standard campaign mission (exactly like co-op) on one team with up to seven friends and the game will fill in AI to make your team add up to 8. However, at the same time, the other team (up to a total of 8 characters) is now comprised of humans and AI. The opposing human gamers are playing on the same map, but a different goal in their campaign. They aren't necessarily out to oppose you every step of the way, because they have their own objectives, their own mission to complete that is presumable mutually exclusive to yours.

In essence, Brink takes your traditional FPS campaign and has made both sides viably and simultaneously playable for its multiplayer mode.

Please read http://www.fragworld.org/frag/community-blogs/brink-info-pt-1-story-gameplay-smart-classes-and-objectives.html for more information. If you did already, read it again; there is a lot of information to absorb.

Really? Really really? those this look like an MMO where thousands of folks are in the same place at the same time? Do people even know what MMO means?

No, it ain't an MMO it just a game that focuses on multiplayer by integrating the MP into the main story like Demon's Souls.

MMO stand for Massively Multiplayer Online.

The correct tern is MMORPG, Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

However, MMORPGs are often the only game to be able to hold ungodly amounts of players. The only other game that comes remotely close is MAG, which is technically a MMOFPS.
