This spiky turning animation , Aaah !

Post » Sun Jul 08, 2012 12:55 pm

Hello Everybody !

Anyway , to shorten it up.
There's a really small , really minor but really annoying thing that I can't avoid.

When you walk , and you take turns to either side , instead of having smooth turning you have this ugly MMOish turn.

It MUST be something REALLY easy to fix , but well I don't see a fix for that.

The walking is fine I see no reason that it needs a fix.

That's called lazyness. Just play Red Dead Redemption or L.A. Noire, now that's how you animate. Skyrim doesn't even feature adaption to surface when a character is running, but only when he walks slowly. These are the very first things that surprised me when I first tried my character in Skyrim, potentially because I have always played games where animations were like they should be.

Okay.. I'll put it more simply.

When you walk normally , you keep walking and you turn your head to right / left , the animation gets buggy.
I really don't know how to explain it perfectly , but it's really stupid.

Even in GTA 4 you had normal body animations.

The way Cole Phelps either walks down or up stairs is exceptional.

Also, I know that Bethesda and Rockstar Games stands between an abyss, but things like these should be part of every modern game's character that live in an open world.

They put a lot of work in 3rd person (it's better than Oblivion), but... It's not there yet.

I only play in 1st person, so I don't notice.

Animations have never been one of Bethesda's strong suits.

Just took a random video from GTA 4 ( Never actually played it )

Look at the movement animations at the beginning , when I compare that with my character I want to cry.

The best 3rd person I've seen is GTA, Red dead, LA Noire and Max Payne. All by Rockstar. Bethesda do much better open world building, though, overall.

The weird thing is that when you are carrying too much to be able to run, it's smooth.

Bethesda and technology are not very good friends. That's why some of their department needs a major revamp.

The bug is fixed !!
I was like , Thanks the Nine !!!

After two minutes when I sold the things and walked normally it was back , Just Wow.

This. I play in first person anyway so Beth being a lil lazy on the animation is fine.

At least there's no more sashaying hips like oblivions NPCs had >.<

I understand that , I play mostly first person too , but well walking in the cities gets really lame with that.

In 1st person, your head glides around the land like its a hovercraft. As it doesn't bob up and down. Bethesda did actually fix that, but it was taken out due to fans moaning here when the trailer went online. So, now, hovercraft.

I just hate the little instantaneous facing maneuver your character does when you're looking forward then going imediantly in the opposite direction

Yeah, that bugs me a bit too when I play in 3rd person.

Unfortunately Bethesda really has severe problems with animation in their games.
At least they made a huge leap from Fallout 3/Oblivion to Skyrim but I expect an even bigger leap for their next game.

That annoys the crap out of me. Even Dragon Age Origins, wich were released in 2009 had better character movementsanimation.

Bethesda are still years behind technology wise.

You guys do realize that there are no actual character animations in Rockstar games from GTA IV onwards right? They're handled by a special physics engine that calculates character movements called euphoria.

True dat, but doesn't mean that there could have been less lazyness on animations.
