This worked for me

After more than ten hours straight without a crash (up from about 5-10 minutes) I wanted to confirm my earlier post http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1143181-crash-to-desktop-revisited/page__view__findpost__p__16707404

Because this is a complex issue and PC configurations are so diverse there is no guarantee that this will help you. But I can definitely say that it was the root cause of most of my problems. (As was AA, which I still have turned off.)

In short: Background programs that access the Internet can cause crashes. It wouldn't hurt to close anything other than virus programs that display an icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar and see if that helps.

Since I am starting a new game and my savegame files are small (approaching 3 meg) I will be interested to see if they cause instability as they get larger. By endgame mine were 10 megs.

In my experience, nothing will fix it. It'll eventually CTD no matter what. I thought for sure I did some ini changes and stuff with FO3 to prevent freezing but it eventually came back, just had a lucky stretch. It has something to do with the game engine and is likely unfixable. Even in a previous life, the gamebryo core 3d engine known as netimmerse also caused many a CTD and xbox1 freeze on morrowind

Yeah I had made the mistake of updating iTunes for some stupid reason and forgot to disable its startup processes like I usually do. That had a dramatic effect on my stability. Silly unhelpful iTunes helper crashing my strangely picky game.

My roommate also discovered that a game he had purchased a year ago and unistalled (off of GamersGate) came with the added extra of SecuROM- using the removal utility for that helped immensely. He also ended up realizing he simply could not leave Chrome open in the background or.. *shudders*... Safari.

I crash and I don't run anything in the background that accesses the internet. Steam in online or offline mode doesn't make a difference.

Who even runs background programs while gaming? Really?

It's F:NV not something else. Just because you happened to get lucky one time after you did the hokey pokey and played F:NV with your pants on your head doesn't mean wearing your pants on your head after doing a stupid dance makes F:NV stable.

No. It is unique to your configuration. I have literally crashed only once.

AMD Athlon 6400+ (dual core)
ATI 5770
Creative Labs X-Fi Xtreme Music
4 gig ram
W7 64 bit Home Premium

I am not saying that FONV isn't sensitive, But, the logical conclusion is that since most people aren't having this problem (the PC Issues board is very quiet for a new game), then there are outside factors triggering your crashes.

A good place to start is by posting your DX Diag.

Game keeps crashing on me as well lately, had the ocasional CTD, but the longer I play the more ofthen it happens. I play with Steam in offline-mode and have no Internet connection at home (used the 3G on my cell to intsall... cost me more than the CE of the game did!). I don't even have a Anti-Virus program installed... nothing else running in the background either. Nor do I use any mods...

There's about 105 pages worth of threads with hundreds of dxdiags. If there was something wrong with my configuration it wouldn't be isolated to New Vegas.

Quiet for a new game? Really? This board exploded in the first week faster than FO3's PC issues boards in the first three.

Your conclusion is laughably bad. You make the flawed assumption that everyone with issues goes through the trouble of making a forum account to post about it. Just looking at this thread right now, 1 member (me) and 2 guests are viewing this. That's 2 people that could have crash issues looking for a solution that don't have a forum account and aren't posting about it. Logical conclusion my foot. Might want to work on your logic.

If you wanted some indication of numbers, you could simply go looking at the number of unique downloads of say the D3D9 file on Newvegasnexus. Going by the PC sales numbers, over 30% of the number of total PC sales had downloaded the file. A fix for a potential crash issue that had been known since FO3 and that very few people have issues.

And you're telling me it's my configuration and not New Vegas. Yeah, I might believe you.

Nah, just kidding. The data is available.

In addition, crash issues and similar issues exist for the XBox and PS3 versions. Consoles are hardware and software normalized. Maybe it's Microsoft's and Sony's fault and all XBoxes/PS3s are inherently faulty and should post dxdiags too. har har.

Newvegasnexus tracks total downloads and unique downloads - but you have to view the individual mod page to see unique downloads. The total number of unique downloads for all versions of the d3d9.dll file on newvegasnexus is around 50,000 - but since there aren't reliable numbers for total PC sales it's hard to say what percent of users that is. It's probably more like 10% though - but that is still a nontrivial portion of users and would tend to suggest a flaw worthy of patching.

As to those who say the game will always CTD and/or freeze, you are wrong. I had no issues with Oblivion. Had random CTD's in Fallout 3 do to it not being fully Quad Core Compatible (.ini fix required) and for Fallout New Vegas, random freezes and CTD's were traced to NON-WINDOWS CODECS and NOT BEING FULLY QUAD CORE CAPATIBLE (Same .ini fix required as in fallout 3).

Intel Quad Core Q660 2.54 Hhz
Nvidia 250 GTS 1GB (260.99 drivers)
500 GB Western Digital HD
Realtek Onboard Sound (2.54 drivers)
Windows XP SP3
Direct X 9.0c (Updated)
Fallout New Vegas Patched up via steam.

Yes, thats right no more freezes or CTD's. However, I consider the Game unplayable do to the many in game bugs which still exist.

I have come to chew bubble gum and get ripped off by purchasing substandard games. And I am all out of bubble gum.

If you're still having problems and havent found anything useful here, instead of ranting I suggest you post to bethesda. This isnt their official tech support forums. This is just a place for gamers to help other gamers with suggestions. Some common problems are resolved here. Seriously your preaching to the choir. Tell it to bethesda's real tech support. They have an email address and a number in the Please Read Before Posting thread.

Yeah, really. I run a multi tasking computer not a game console. Games should be good citizens on my box and not try to dictate terms.

Not true and non-responsive to this topic.

The engine is quite old and proven. it gets the job done in several major games. There is tons of help for engine issues across several of these boards if that is your issue.

What I was trying to point out is that there seems to be some stability issues with running programs that access the internet at the same time as FONV. Since the game itself has no connection to the internet the likely culprit is Steam.

Not responsive. Not relevant. Snarky :stare:
This was posted for those it might help. Why comment? It was no help to you and your comment was no help to anyone else.

I'm sorry that this didn't help you, but as I said to the poster above, if it doesn't apply to you there was no need for you to comment.. There are other threads where you can get some help for your specific problem

Welcome to the real world. Take this up with Microsoft and their less than bulletproof operating systems.

This thread has veered wildly off track and it's time to lock it up or it won't be of use to anyone.
