Thoughts on a new character

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 3:51 am

So I got my sneak/archer Khajit to level 40 last night and I think it is time not to move on, but at least start one more (preferably 2) characters. My ideas were either a

-Orc that specializes in two-handed weapons and heavy armor
-A Redguard that is sort of a jack-of-all-trades (would specialize in light armor/one-handed/archery/destruction)
-A high elf or dark elf full on mage

Some questions:
Is an Orc better than a Nord as a heavy, tank-type character?
Is a character that spread out (the redguard) playable early in the game or would I be too weak without specializing in something?
Even though they have no initial skill bonuses in magic I would like to make a wood elf archer/mage, is that playable?

Any race or build combination really is survivable through the early game. Sounds like your Redguard might be too similar to your Khajiit if you use a lot of stealth; you might like the Orc build for a very different, run up and whack, style of play. If you go one handed you'll be wondering what to do with the other hand, so you'll have to think about dual weapons, shield, or a regular go-to left hand spell.

1. I prefer orc, but that's just because of looks. They're both effective in heavy combat.
2. I'm afraid the redguard character would be spreading your perk points too thin. It would probably be best to pick archery -or- destruction, rather than both.
3. Yes, any race + skill combo is playable, and will eventually become powerful, if you stick with it. Again, though, archery+destruction isn't something I would do :)

The wood elf archer would be more a conjuration mage than a destruction mage......destruction seems underpowered and archery at higher levels is ridiculously powerful at some times. My concern with the wood elf is that it will be too much like my Khajit.....is there any way to be an archer without being a sneak character?

Yup figured it out gonna go with an orc tank RP lol gonna join the companions for sure. Then I think im gonna run with the wood elf archer that specializes in illusion and conjuration, thanks for the input. Excited about the wood elf think it will be a very fun character to play.

1: Not really. It will start with a higher Heavy Armor skill(10 points), but it makes no difference after a few levels.
2: Early in the game you don't have many perks in the first place so I believe it would be. I do recomend that you take most(if not all) of the damage increasing perks for your damage skill to keep up with the higher levels. Oh, little tip: Taking Steel Smithing(no requirement) will make steel weapons more viable at higher levels than most other materials, unless you also have the perk for that material.
3: All races can play as all archetypes. Some races are more viable at lover levels, but after a little while it does not matter. They all reach skill level 100 sooner or later ;)

Also: I think the Redguard sounds the most fun to play.
