My Thoughts on New Vegas

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 5:09 am

:cryvaultboy: I'll start with bugs. (PS3 fresh install) (where else would I post these?)

-All my slot machines come up with the wrong graphic it shows just the black screen from the pip-boy with mo shading and no pip-boy backgrounds, Just the blank glass part of the pip-boy (Same thing with picking locks in the robo co. facility.)

-Constant freezing... related to graphics. Happens sometimes when; Turn on my pip-boy light,I load a new area, load areas with sky changes like hidden Vally or the town with the green haze over it.

-Twice I lost stuff placed in a box in the prez. suite of the lucky 38, its the box to the left of the work bench... I know for a fact things vanished from it because its the only chest I use there. (moved my operations to the brotherhood outpost, might be a different programmer so it could be less buggy.)

:vaultboy: Things I like

-follower AI has massively improved, as well as the interface to interact with them.

-hardcoe mode, even though it was to hard to find rad-away a few times.

:sadvaultboy: Things I don't like (I Spent some Time in Vegas BTW)

-the map lay out is inaccurate but I expected that. Its really a non issue.

-Once out and about and well traveled the map feels small... mush smaller then the last fallout...

-Can't find area 2, even though its referenced by the boomers and IRL its part of Nellis AFB (go Thunderbirds)

-Try to push me around a map... I made it through your deathclaws as a noob! take that!

-have yet to train for power armor and I'm done with the brotherhood quest as fare as I know... NCR maybe... but I hate them...

-Where is my back story being creative -50 points... I felt like I slipped and fell in a plot hole.

:fallout: Overall

This is a title I'm glade I bought and I've played fallout since the first one and love them all. I would like to see a 4th with control improvements and much more vault goofiness! All the vaults in Vegas were to serous. and there is never to much weird or WTF when it come to vaults... But were could the next one take place? Seattle with its computer, air plains and coffee... Miami, Texico (border of Texas and Mexico) Great Lakes area...

Any chance of an MMO where we can be human, mutant, ghoul, even... alien and/or lurk?

Can't wait for game updates and DLC.

- The follower UI is a big improvement over the old conversation style. But the UI does a poor job of showing you the current status of each setting, when you mouse-over that part of the wheel it tells you what it will change it *to* and you have to memorize or interpret the graphics to figure out what the current setting is.

- There are parts of the map that feel large and empty, and other parts that feel claustrophobic. It's very uneven. Up around the east side of Vegas is very weird with big areas and no NPCs or things, while the area around Goodsprings is jam packed. I would expect more odds and ends around the boundaries of Vegas then in the middle of nowhere.

- The quality control on models added to the landscape was very poor. Lots of floating rocks and floating trees. Some are minor, no more then a hand-span or so, but some are floating multiple feet in the air and are extremely obvious.

But mostly, I'm having fun - just the usual Oblivion / Fallout 3 bugs (the crashes, the freezes, the actors that slide across the terrain and can't jump over a small fence, etc).

Update on my playings.

-Still crashing constantly. I even keep 2 saves chains for my single active game, because of the fear of another corrupted save...

-Still hate being a courier... and the lack of my characters back story. I just watched a show about space and black holes and that there is a super massive black hole at the center of our galaxy... it reminded me of the plot holes in FONV...

-I no longer even care about the main story line because I beat it thinking I could come back to side quests... Not Open ended, what a fail. FIRE THE GUY THAT DECIDED TO MAKE IT 'NOT' OPEN ENDED.

-I completely agree with Snabbik's comment about the maps quality... even in areas I'm allowed to be in I get stuck... I have come to call out "F***!!! not another Developers a** crack" when I get stuck. some times I'm half below the terrain and other times my character keeps auto jumping in place and unable to move in any direction...

-I have come to hate invisible walls more now then ever before... and have made them my mortal enemy. I have effectively busted out of the map in several places and run a muck behind your boundaries!!

-Buildings sweet buildings... I'm so sick of not being able to enter buildings... "WOW 20 buildings in this little area! but not one to explore..." because my uber courier cant get past a few boards on a door way... I could understand if half the building I came across were boarded up... but it feels like about 85% of the buildings are just for looks?

@ wild wasts... I played with out this and with it... there is such a little difference that its useless.... ok i don't get jumped by old ladies and I don't find aliens and see so much graffiti...

@ Quests... there fun at least... even if they lack some "THIS"

@ Weapon mods... I love the concept but the execution is fail... you have 4 different scopes and lots of scope-able weapons... why can I fix a laz. rifle scope on my sniper rifle? and there are 3 or 4 sizes of clips for RL 9m pistols why not be able to apply extended mags 3 times to a gun? Also some guns get only one or 2 mods? and none have more the 3... I get the no more then 3 attached at a time.. but why not more available mods.

@ Weapons... My only issue is were are the custom built weapons? Railway rifle was my favorite from FO3 the silly train noise and sticking heads to walls with rail spikes shot from said rifle... was epic... I have yet to find such "gratification" from a FONV weapon...

@ Armor.. OMG In what game does the player want to run around in ugly armor the entire time...? I would wear reinforced combat armor if it came in a different hue... and recon armor is still teh gay. I just cant stand brown...

-more map thoughts. I mentiond it before about items vanishing... well I can tell were lazy programmers worked on the game and where more capable programmers worked... in this economy I'm sure you can hire better programmers... Hell I know some that are out of work... you can find them building mmo free servers.

-For fear of giving away good ideas for free I'm not going to continue on... What us Ultima Online free shard builders say about EA applies to BO (B! O! No wonder the game stinks! Bethesda/Obsidian) we make there game better then they do. (That being said, I'm willing to build/compile a list of suggestions and lay out some custom systems that would blow your minds. for a small fee of course.)

I'm much less happy about getting this game then I was before. I'll wait till its finished being updated/patched/fixed and is sold packaged with all its DLC before I put any more money in this game... I'll never make an early perches of a BO game again... I'll wait till its been out a month or 2 so I can see if its filled with bugs and lacking in areas I feel important to my enjoyment.
