Three months since release....

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 2:47 am

Well, Skyrim has now been out for three months, time to look back and assess how it's going.

I got the game on it's first day of release and I must admit that I've played it nearly every day since.
I've still just used the one character, and he's done lots of exploring and side quests, in fact I just completed the main quest yesterday.
So I'm enjoying it a lot and I'm now thinking of starting another character and trying the game from a different angle, not quite sure what as yet.

Generally I must say I'm enjoying it, it's not perfect by a long way, but it's been good enough to keep me entertained for more hours that I'd like to count over the last three months.

Let's see what the next three months brings... I'm on PC so it's nearly time to start looking out for mods. Having played Morrowind I know that the Elder Scrolls modding community can come up with some amazing stuff, so let's see what they do with Skyrim.

Ummm.... Well congrats that you were able to get so much "bang for your buck" in this game...

Im positive there will be too many mods for you to play before the next TES comes out.

I'd bet you will be enjoying it.

Stopped playing Skyrim about a month & a half ago. I can't find the inspiration to fire it up. Too bad I have it on PS3...no mods for me.

I've been taking a break for the last three weeks or so before the CK comes out. I didn't want to risk getting burnt out on the game just as a bunch of great mods were released. I started an Oblivion character in the meantime, but have been having some trouble feeling the old magic with that game.

I'm about ready to jump back into Skyrim, refreshed after my sabbatical. I'm really excited to see what modders do with this game over the coming months. It should be very exciting.

I got bored of the quests, although I have still to experience at least 50% of the world.

I also run into an issue with my character not looking its part anymore. My Legion Orc became an outlaw who is now starting to work with the Stormcloaks as well. Yet he looks like a Legionair with his short hair and no beard. So I decided to stop playing and hope that Bethesda's first DLC includes a Barbershop (or something similar to change my appearance).

I really enjoyed the game while it lasted, I must have put 90 hours into it. Which is much more than the average game, but nto even close to the numbers I put into Morrowind and Oblivion without playing anything else at the same time. So in that regards Skyrim is a new low in hours played for me.

I had to invest in mods to keep the game interesting three weeks into the game. Well, it was even a bit of a necessity in my case, the default interface was ridiculously handicapped and SkyUI was a god-sent blessing (but still not what I'd like. Give grid interface plz). I've been playing it off and on since then, about 180 hours clocked in spread over three characters. I'm happy that we finally get a singleplayer game you can get such large amounts of gametime out of, but I get the feeling I'd be playing it a lot more if the adventure experience wasn't the only thing that stands out as truly appealing to me.

I've also had to start using mods to keep my game feeling fresh and interesting. I never started using any mods at all with Morrowind for well over a year, although i never had Internet back then so that is partly why. I did have internet when Oblivion was released however, and probably downloaded my very first mod for the game 6 to 7 months after the games release. Although i had built my own houses with the CS long before then.

Skyrim has shocked me, i enjoy it a lot no doubt, but i've been using mods since i completed all of the main quest lines. I was disappointed with a lot of the quests in Skyrim and the Nordic/Viking landscape doesn't catch me as much as the lush green lands of Cyrodiil and completely alien world of Morrowind did. That said, i do rate Skyrim above Oblivion for many reasons.

I'm just getting used to the new CK and have already added lots of exciting random encounters as well as 2 houses and a hide out for my self. With better mods coming out every day i will probably be able to stay interested for a good while longer yet.

I agree. I'm loving it (despite some flaws) it is an outstanding game.
I honestly cant understand why some people slate it so much.

Though rarely, I can still get surprised by Skyrim.
Finding a dungeon I never entered before or standing on a peak admiring a stunning vista.
Chasing butterflies never gets old for some reason.
Recently I very much enjoy being a vampire. The negative effects you get are kind of a hardcoe mode. You have to carefully plan how to use you magic, health and stamina because its not instant regen guaranteed.
You also have to eat to stay alive. (You have to eat people so you wont become stage four and get killed by your foodsource.)

I've been playing since release also and still loving it. Honestly though, much of that enjoyment is due to mods. The engine has so many ways to make enemy AI actually challenging (using cover, healing themselves, having class defining perks like the player etc). The vanilla game doesn't use more than a fraction of the potential AI. I can only assume that's because consoles can't handle the extra cpu usage or something. Really doesn't make sense why so much is unused in the base game otherwise.

Skyrim is a tool for your imagination... it's not a very good "game". Players who play it for advancement find that advancement is pretty shallow. You're essentially just as powerful shortly after the opening scene as you ever will be. Players who play it for "story" are going to find the stories created by the game itself are quite shallow, to allow players to make themselves into the story. Players who seek "cred" for building a character more powerful than their friends are also disappointed by the lack of cred they're getting.

But it's great for those of us who simply want a world to play in.

I only bought it this week, so 3 months along means nothing to me other than patches and mods.
Must say I'm extremely pleased with the game so far, shame I had to wait so long to purchase it.

It's an awesome game.... On the PC, after playing it on/off since release on the Xbox i find it to be quite.... Generic in some ways.... It has too much real world stuff in it, and very little alieness/fantasyness... Makes it hard to get absorbed. I guess it was kinda hard to pull these things off for this game, but we shall see what future DLC brings... Hopefully there will be something similar to Oblivions Shivering Isles.

Hey Jeffers...I've played Skyrim almost every day since release (worked in OWBinFNV while waiting for a patch) and I love Skyrim just as much as in the beginning, if not more. I expect that to grow as those mods come out and I think of more characters to play. I won't admit to how many hours I've played since it'll just show I don't go out much anymore. :D I've run into a few issues but it was not unexpected and I just ride it out because it's that worth it. I haven't yet tried to go back to my first character since this last patch but I'll see if I can take her through the MQ now after patch 1.4. I haven't done it yet and honestly, if I don't, I'm ok with that until I get curious enough to do it. I'm having that much fun without it. Keep your eyes on the skies! :tes:
