Thundercats!

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 2:44 am

Tonight was episode 2. Last weekend was the hour long premiere for the show.

My initial impressions between last weekend and tonight are mixed. Its a far cry from the original series. But, I didn't expect it to be exactly the same as the original series. I do like how it is more cinematic and appears to be more story driven, though, it's still early in the season and the reboot to honestly say (predict) that it will remain this way.

Many of the characters for the most part are the same, with few exceptions. Mainly, the mutants. There are a lot more of them. Mainly as other characters. They've seemingly removed any mention of Plun-Darr or Thundera (sp?) and have referenced or mentioned Third Earth quite a bit. If memory serves me correct, I could have sword Thundera was the planet the Thundercats hailed from but retreated or fled to Third Earth after the mutants led by Mumm-Ra attacked Thundara. In the new series it would appear that Thundera is the main city/kingdom on the planet Third Earth. Which would lead me to believe that Plun-Darr may not play a role in the new series unless at a later date. I did notice that Slithe and Grune are still present but it seems as though Slithe so far has played a small part in the premiere. I'm not so sure how I honestly feel about Lion-O and how he has been drawn and I hope they do something with his "accelerated" growth like they did in the original. Perhaps I'm wrong on the planetary structure and they are actually on Thundera and will be traveling to Third Earth? I'm not sure.

Again, its still very early to make any wild predictions on the show but I must say, aside from my mixed feelings' which mainly lie with the characters and how they've been restructured I'm enjoying the reboot. I thoroughly like the hand-drawnness (sp?), the cinematic feel and the music. Although, I do admit to actively seeking out the familiar "Rankin Bass" tag at the beginning and end of the show but I know it's not there. But, its a good thing that the styling of it reminds me so much of the old Rankin Bass cartoon.

What are everyone else's feelings on this show if anyone has actually bothered to watch it?

I've seen the pilot two-parter and yes, this is something I will follow for a while. Animation, script and voicework are great.

Yeah, I might even stay just for Cheetara. :shifty:

Unfortunately, I missed it last week, and it comes on in a while here, so I've only seen ads. My question is, where is Panthro? I haven't seen him in the commercials.

Apparently Grune the Destroyer presumably killed Panthro. It was hinted at during the pilot episode when Grune
Spoiler
brought the Trojan Horse with Slithe inside of it to Thundera. At one point during the episode Mumm-Ra posed as Panthro to get the Sword of Omens but was defeated. I surmise Panthro is actually not dead and is in fact a prisoner of Mumm-Ras' to be rescued during a later episode.

And I always thought Cheetara was.....in the old series but she definitely is nicer in the new series.....

Ah, ok. Hopefully I'll get to see a re-run of the pilot at some point.

I like the animation, I like the characters, I even like the plot.

But I didn't really like the script itself. The dialogue had too many one-liners and cheesy cliche phrases in it. Hopefully they'll get some real writers in on it.

Give it some time, it's only 2 episodes in, I'm sure it'll get better once all the characters are established.

Um, just out of curiosity, why do the kids have tails? They did not in the original. Not that it's bad, just wondering.

Not interested, to be frank. Semi-serious cartoons are overstuffed with bad pop culture references, jokes, and "witty" banter between the characters. It makes me feel like I'm five, and it's the reason I can't enjoy any of those superhero cartoons. It's rather ironic how these shows tend to have flatter and more unfunny jokes than My Little Pony, which manages to make me laugh and take the characters seriously at the same time. I'm sure the animation is good and the art style is nice, but those are both true for all the other series I can't stand.

Hmmm, Lion-o tends to be a bit of an ass.

Yeah, I don't know why they added tails to WilyKat and WilyKit. To be honest, I didn't even notice it.

Sub_Tonic,

I'm sorry you feel that way. Its proving to be a pretty good show. You should at least give it a chance. I enjoy MLP as well even though its more "kiddy".
