Tired of Followers Tripping Traps

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 11:37 am

I'm really tired of my followers tripping traps. I've got the light-foot perk, but still, I can see the darn things sitting in the middle of the floor and walk around them anyway. But, my followers just traipse right over them. I tried adding the light-foot perk to them by clicking on them in the console and entering:

addperk 5820c

It doesn't work. Is it even possible to give perks to NPCs? Is there some other way to do this?

Not AFAIK. Other than not using followers of course.

Yes there needs to be some work on follower AI. Besides traps, I'd like to see them be able to use potions and poisons and level with you.

they will use potions you give them , generally only health potions. they do technically level, but their stats dont change, this can be fixed with console commands though.

Solution is to get her up along the wall as she follow after you she will miss the trigger, think driving with an trailer.
Aela is actually worse as she keep an longer distance from you making her harder to control. Guess this is true for all ranged followers.

Think that process is simply bugged, hit Aela with an 300 damage bow and it just took 10-15% of her health, so she must have good light armor skill and health.

Since we, apparently, can't light-foot our followers, it would be nice if we could disarm traps. Or, maybe mark them for our followers to avoid.

This, this and thrice this. In Fallout we could do exactly that and it was great.

Even though you can disarm a couple of the traps in Skyrim it's annoying that the tripwires will still set the trap off when disarmed.

Followers/thralls shouldn't even need to trigger traps.
I don't find it adds to the game at all.

Except for tripwires, most trapped doors and chests are disarm-able. If you remember to LOOK for a trap.... *sigh* (my toons have a habit of not being particularly observant - couldn't be their "controller", oh no!) And you can generally jump over tripwires if you notice them.

followers are a pain when it comes to traps etc.

i have found that i can set off tripwires with a bow

so that the hippo behind me won't kill me with the trap.

Yea, I love the light foot perk and with my current character who is build around sneaking and archery, I never take a follower with me. They would just ruin my silent set ups! During dragon attacks, I have Shadowmere, who tanks the beast LOL

My other two characters are dual-wielding warriors (rush in and fight haha) types, so I like having an archer or mage along side. Makes some things easier.

Follower AI definitely needs some tweaking, but still, I love the concept and that Beth actually added it to a TES game.

You mean they don't use the potions I gave them! One used healing ,Faendal I think, at least I think he did.
I tried to buy a horse for follower, no joy there and I am finding it difficult to better equip them especially with respect to armor.
lydia doesn't appear to like better enchanted armor, is the type of enchantment that is the problem, cause I have equipped both Sven and Faendal
with this armor, that I made and they put it on no prob, but not Lydia. Go figure
I try to shoot the traps or conjure up my wolf to spring it but some seem to come alive again just to get your follower.
This game has a string of nasty surprises, I believe you just have to run away from some till a higher level just keep one eye on the sky, the dragons are searching for you dragonborn.
My second dragon attack was hard , just Lydia and I , but I feel that the dragons are a lot easier than the bosses below.

If the armor looks the same that she's already wearing, then yea, she won't use Steel armor. But she will put on anything else that's better than hers. I have her wearing glass armor in one game, Steel plate armor in another and full ebony in yet another saved. lol

Yea, I wish they would use potions and would be able to ride a horse. It just doesn't feel right that they have to run behind my horse LOL Well, in Lydia's case maybe, she's annoying. I think I'll sacrifice her this time around. =p

How about this. Suppose the game allowed us to "mark" a place on the ground (like casting a rune) which the follower would have to avoid? Suppose you could cast up to 10 and they lasted say a minute. That would allow you to tell your follower where NOT to step. It would be a step in the right direction, right?

And if you or they set off a trap, THEY should be smart enough not to do it again.

The enchantments have no effect on whether followers will wear armor you give them - all that matters is the base armor rating of the item. If it's better than that of the armor they currently have equipped, they'll wear it; if it's not, they won't. And for followers that use robes or other items that take up a head and body slot, you have to give them headgear with an armor rating or they won't equip armor that you give them at all.

Lydia starts with Steel Armor and has extra points in her Heavy Armor skill, so you'll need a much stronger item for her than you will for Sven or Faendal to make any of them wear it.

Does anyone know if followers will use potions besides healing? Argis uses healing potions on his own, but I've tried giving him resist Frost and Fire and Restore Stamina, which he does not seem to ever use. Also, since I made him a complete set of Epic level Orcish armor, he wears it when we leave the house, but now can't carry more than his weapons and a couple of potions. Does the armor they come with weigh them down? I can't take it away from him, but his usefulness as a pack horse has been seriously diminished.

Oh, I have found that if I'm moving slowly, particularly if I'm sneaking, my follower will generally walk in my footsteps enough that if there is a trap in the middle of the doorway or room, he will go around it if I do. Only time it's really a problem is if there is not much room around the trigger. If it's smack dab in the middle of a narrow doorway, he's setting the thing off. Quite annoying.
