I'm tired of the way followers equip items.

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 2:34 pm

I don't like how they equip the item with the highest stat points.

I wanted Aela to wear normal "clothes" but she will only wears her default or better armor.

Tried to upgrade the "clothes" to have better defense but the game doesn't let you do it. =_=

Pretty annoying.

Should've just added a "Equip to follower" button on the items menu.

Or do it like every other damn game and do a paper doll for you and your follower(s).

Unless the "Official Player's Guide" is completely wrong, it would seem that they never equip what their primary skill would dictate they should wear. A mage should equip robes, maybe a dagger or staff, and then sling spells. Instead, I've got Brelyna wearing Steel Plate armor and a greatsword. A dainty dark elf mage shouldn't do such things! Either give us the ability to choose what they equip or fix the darn mechanic!

If on PC...

Empty everything from your companion.
Open console and click on them.
Type in "RemoveAllItems".
Close console and open companion inventory.
Place in your desired cloths.
???
Profit.

I think the right solution would be that every article of clothing in the follower's inventory (minus the perma-undies) would be visible to the player. Then the player is in complete control of the follower's wardrobe. Beth managed the clothing/armor for followers in FO3 the same way they've done it here. Players complained about it in the FO3 forums all the time, but apparently it didn't make much of an impact on the way they think things should be done

There should be an option:

1. Wear what I select, and like it (meaning they keep wearing it until I tell them otherwise even if I give them other stuff to carry)
2. Pick the best stuff in your inventory and use it.

That way they could dress for town or roles, but equip up for a battle.

Yeah, it's frustrating. Seems like something most of us are stuck with. It doesn't seem like something that'll change. I'd be happy if followers would wear the best armor, but they sometimes choose otherwise.

I think they always equip the item with the highest monetary value. I gave Janessa a ring of regeneration 40% and an unenchanted diamond ring and she insists on equiping the unenchanted one.

Close console and open companion inventory.
Place in your desired cloths.
???
Profit.

That only works until you enter a new cell, then it reverts.

It's better then aela having a ebony bow (epic) and using her old hunting bow instead. Eventhough I took it away from her. She uses everything else though.

indeed Istopped doing it that way because it was a pain. Once the CK comes out hopefully there will be better companions. I'm looking of some thign like CM partners at minimum.

Muahaha. Unfortunately, this video is not available in your country ... not granted the respective music rights.

:) :) :)

Anyways, people. Followers are not paper dolls or puppets. They are (trying to be) people with their own will and equip whatever they think is better, not what you command them to. Aside from the currently bugged bow, their behavior is completely normal.

No, these followers are not trying to be anything. They are pack mules and meat shields. They are the bare minimum and are not exhibiting any type of personality traits when they do what they do.

@Andaius - In the meantime, until the CK comes out and there are better followers to use, if you go into the console and do showinventory you can then do removeitem for the hunting bow (you only need showinventory to get the ID of the hunting bow). I've had to remove as many as six out of Marcurio's inventory (that was done at one time; not on separate occasions), but once I've done it that way he will use whichever bow I give him without fail.

If you are on console don't give therm arrows. Go into their inventory periodicly to check if they have arrows. If they have even one, remove it. They will then use the bow you gave them.

I really don't see a problem - I gave Lydia some heavy duty Ebony armor, took the regular stuff away, and now she wears the Ebony - I do give her "loot" to carry that is almost never as good as her stuff, and she stays with her armor. Same thing with weapons - although she seemed to like a 2 handed battle ax over a 1 handed war ax - but once I took battle ax away, she started using the 1 handed ax (and a shield instead of a 2nd weapon). She will sometimes switch to a bow (also Ebony and loaded for bear)

If you're expecting her to wear a dress to the prom - well you're just out of luck until some one mods it

They are walking planks of wood with zero personality. You can't pull the "the npc's have their own will" card then completely ignore that they are total robot zombie puppets in every other way.

You don't need to control everything; your followers are people, they are allowed their own choices. Just adapt or give them armours that are better than the one they're already wearing. ;)

Yes this. Its just beyond annoying when i want my follower to wear master robes, yet he somehow wants to wear his default adept robes instead. :glare:

Its nice to have your follower with some personallity on their pref fight style and items, but, as mentioned they don't. They're just broken. I still use them though. Maybe try different followers? I find many will only follow you after a quest or two is done though. But there seems to be more and more followers the more I play.

Which reminds me, I havnt played in a while. Hmm.

I actually agree with a lot of this.

Ideally ALL of the follower's inventory should be on show. Including their base armour an bow. These tend to be hidden by default. You may be able to remove their default Sword or Shield, but beyond that... it's hidden.

A full inventory of all items and an option to equip would be brilliant. It might even be possible to do this with the LT/RT buttons or A buuton that tthe user has.

It's one of my grumbles really, that all Inventories in game should really function in the same way. They did in Oblivion. Skyrim's UI is huge step back in that regard. Likewise the removal of categories from all chests, wardrobes and the like.

There really should be one rule for all cases. It actually makes a lot less sense to change that.

I thought this thread was going to be about companion's annoying habit of sheathing and redrawing their weapons every time you change your equipped spell or something. That annoys me too.
