Too many stickies?

Post » Mon Aug 22, 2011 8:54 pm

There are way more stickies than there used to be. Lots of new stickies have crept in during recent years which might not necessarily need to be there. Here are some thoughts on how to get the number back down again.

- The Community Poll and Member Pictures threads used to be just 1 thread (aptly called "Community Poll and Member Pics"). It can be again.
- "Introduce Yourself" is redundant and can be unstickied. Let the users decide if it deserves to keep being used.
- "Happy Birthday thread" is redundant and can be unstickied. Let the users decide if it deserves to keep being used.
- "Community Discussion - let's keep it under control!" can be integrated with the Rules thread. Warnings like these do little to help the forum. And besides, check out the View count - no-one even reads it. This text has a better chance of getting read in the Rules thread, which gets many views.

With those 4 removals, we'll be back to 5 stickies - a pretty sane number. Similar to what we previously had. 5 sticky slots is a nice number. It leaves us with:
1, The rules. Nice and important.
2, Community Poll and Member Pics. Sure.
3, Folding@Home. A bit underused, but for a good cause so no big problem.
4, Whatever the topical Warning of the Week is. These are important (e.g. the Hackers message). This thread is CRITICAL - you can't even log into the forum right now if you have not read that first! It should not be difficult to find due to being buried in a pile of other, more frivolous stickies.
5, Another slot for a 'seasonal' news thread about stuff going on in the community. The podcast thread is there right now, and it's a good one.

Personally doesn't bother me how many stickies are, as I generally tend to ignore them all anyway :|

Yes there are too many stickies, takes up a lot of the page. I have to scroll down now and I'm too lazy to enjoy the extra 1s each time. :P

Good shouts, especially the introduce yourself thread.

It would be nice if there was some sort of seperator to show where the stickies end.

There is, isn't there?? The stickies have lighter coloured backgrounds, and the non-stickies don't.

Just recently I thought to myself there were a lot of stickies in here. Nevertheless, the "Introduce yourself" and "Happy Birthday" threads are primarily stickied so that CD would not be overrun with new threads where people say hello or wish others a happy birthday.

I suppose there are, but it's never really bothered me. Sure some of the threads could be unsticked, but if the mods were willing to do so they would have done it already. "Let the users decide" isn't something I think would fly here.

But while we're on the topic, the Bethesda Podcast questions thread could be removed considering they haven't used any of our questions for quite a long time. :violin:

It's there for me as well.

The more stickies there are up there, the less focus they are getting, people would naturally just skip it, making the chance of being read even worse.

Yeah, there's far too many. The more there are, the less likely they are to be noticed, and they just annoy since the entire screen is taken up with largely unproductive threads when I go into CD.

Several could be merged, e.g. forum rules and notices, demographics and member pics and so on; some don't need to be stickied at all, e.g. Folding (nothing against the subject, but there are more important topics such as the technical thread which aren't stickied) and some could probably be deleted altogether.

I think up to about five works well; any more than that and they're unlikely to be read and are just in the way.

Not on the IPB skin they don't.

Yeah, lets get rid of that annoying "Forum Rules and General Information" thread. We don't need any of them "rules" 'round these parts.

Yeah, too many stickies. The forum rules are just enough. Who reads stickies anyway?

I would prefer to have the whole first page full of stickies and force forumers to go to the second page to read threads.

Agreed, not nearly enough stickies.

On second thought, you're right. Not enough stickies, we need more. Let's have a mod stick this thread.

The old forum boards supported a clear transition between stickies and threads. Stickies kind of look like threads when you're looking on the board index.

No, lets go further. Every new thread from now on will be automatically stickied.

There's too many stickies only when I have to go to page two to see the first ten topics. :vaultboy:

Overall they don't really bother me, and the current number of stickies isn't diabolical anyway. Perhaps the section needs a little bit of a clean up, but it's really just fine.
