Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, are essentially Morrowind and Oblivion in a different setting, and theme. Same graphics engine, and the interface controls are very similar. Mod interface is identical. NV was just Obsidian taking Bethesda's engine and game concept.
Was it just the story of New Vegas that was confusing? The setting maybe? A friend of mine didn't like the Fallout games because they weren't serious enough for him. Too many humorous story elements and events. But that was one of the things I loved. Genre satire. And 3 and NV get pretty dark.
Morrowind was AWESOME though, don't get me wrong. When it first loaded up, and shoved me off the prison ship, I hated it. I didn't know what to do or where to go. It pissed me off. I was standing there in Seyda Neen going, "um...ok...what?" I was so used to linear RPG games, it made me mad to have to play a non-linear game. For about 1 day. Then I loved it. Once it finally sunk in.
Morrowind was revolutionary for that. That makes it one of the greatest games of all time. But, what i'd suggest is, play them both. Don't do one or the other, do both. I think New Vegas will grow on your, if you give it a chance. The biggest difference between the Fallout games and the Elder Scroll games is mainly, just the setting/theme. A somewhat satirical sci-fi game, and Elder Scrolls a sword and sorcery game. But reallly just the same thing. Use different guns and grenades, instead of different spells. I was so psyched when I found out Bethesda was doing Fallout 3, after 10 years from Fallout 2. And it was the Morrowind/Oblivion company. Tjhe're both great.
