Torchlight pirated over 5 million times

You have to understand cracked DRM games are downloadable along with non DRM games in the same sites in China. DRM never worked when it comes to Chinese market. What it does only nausates the experience of real customers. My friends pirates games all the time, but they always turns to buying the real copies when the games were good.

Yep, losing battle is losing. Those who want to pirate games are still going to, and those who want to be grown-ups and support the companies that make products they enjoy will pay for them without being forced to by DRM. The last company that lost my money this way was Ubisoft. I was poised to buy Assasin's Creed 2 for the PC. When I read about how the DRM worked my wallet jumped back into my pocket pretty quickly.

I'm still not sure why they would be okay with them losing... potentially millions of dollars.

They're looking at it as free publicity. That by some people pirating the game (most of which are in China where piracy is most rampant), the game, franchise, and brand is being exposed to more people, who in turn could become more customers down the road, once they get their MMO project up and running. Making this kind of announcement can also prove to be a good PR stunt, as it shows that Runic "cares" and "respects" its customers, unlike some of those OTHER guys.

And yet Beth still intends on lumbering their customers with the godawfull GFWL.

They are? [censored]. I can't play games which use GFWL.

Spoiler
Well, okay, I can... but its more hassle than its worth.

Anyway, props to Runic. Good to see there's some cunning people in the industry .

Bethesda seem to have dropped GFWL in favour of Steamworks. They used it for Fallout: New Vegas and Brink, while Hunted: The Demon's Forge used neither. So I think you'll be safe from GFWL come Skyrim's November release.

The key to successful MMORPG in China is translation to Chinese and F2P business model.

So it's all a Xanatos Gambit. By allowing the Chinese to play their game illegally freely, they will get them hooked on the world and universe of Torchlight, create brand name recognition, get them to buy into a subscription-based MMO that won't be pirated so easily, AND TAKE OVER THE WORLD!

They won't really get hooked to the game, but instead http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/may/25/china-prisoners-internet-gaming-scam.

In any case, I bought Torchlight cheap on a Steam sale quite a while ago to see what the fuzz was all about, and I found the game to be rather boring. Then again, I find the Diablo games boring too. The last Blizzard game I thought was a good is Warcraft 2, and that's 15 years old now. Kinda funny really, a lot of people seem to hold Valve and Blizzard in a very high regard, but I think most of their games are rather meh. Valve did a very good job with their Portal games, though.

I liked Command & Conquer better than WC 2. Diablo is boring, I can't agree more, but Diablo 1 is a good pass time for no brainer.

I hope that this "tactic" for lack of a better word is an overwhelming success for Runic games, so that it might prompt other companies to start doing it as well.

Honestly, there's absolutely no way to stop piracy as long as there is this little thing called the internet.
It's time people realized that, and accepted it.
Good to see someone has.

I've never played Torchlight before, but it is a rather refreshing attitude to see these days when so many other companies are trying to come up with new ways to prevent piracy which usually just end up screwing over their paying customers, almost makes me want to buy the game myself.

And yet if Fallout 3 is anything to go by I'd have preferred they stick with Games For Windows Live, at least I could ignore it's presence easily while playing the game, now I can't ignore Steam when I play games on it.

Yay!

I'm not sure what you're so happy about, they just dropped one crappy DRM system to trade it in for another.

Make that "One crappy DRM system which has an popsicle's chance in hell of working for me for another DRM system which mostly runs fine [for me]". Ideally I'd be able to get a DRM free version that runs natively, but I'll take Wine and Steam over nothing (which is what GFWL works out as).

EDIT: And "Yay!" may have been an exaggeration my reaction.

I have no clue what Torchlight is, or who made it.
But I now somehow feel compelled to buy all their products.
