I've always ran right through the intro quest, but recently I took more time to search the area. You jump of the inn second floor, Hadvar tells the kid to get out the way. His dad is lying down on the floor and his last words are "Make me proud boy." and then Alduin sets him on fire. That moment actually riled me up and made me just wana smack Alduin down right then and there.
I could never run right through anything when it comes to an Elder Scrolls game! When Alduin first came into view, I couldn't help but admire him; his presence was just so... powerful. When he broke part of the wall on the tower I was just stuck there captivated and looking at him, it actually killed me.
If you quickly run past the dragon before he can toast the father, I dragon will take off to it's next scripted location, thus saving the father. The boy doesn't run over to his father or anything, but he is alive.

True story. And when you visit the cabin the father is there laying on the floor in the same position he was when dying.
