Towns in Skyrim

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 8:57 am

Which are your favorite cities/towns in the game?

I find Markath and Whiterun just stupendously great. The houses architecture, the characters, the quests, the landscape around it... everything!

However, I think that Beth, probably, became a bit lazy in designing the other towns. Riften seems another copy of Bravil, Morthal, Dawnstar and Winterhold are just too small. Winterhold is so small that having a Jarl just seems stupid.

Second, considering beth is using medieval towns as inspiration for the game, I think people shouldn't have such big houses. In the medieval age there were buildings with more than 2 floors and each family flat was really small. In Skyrim, there is too much space between houses and they are too big for one family

Riften and Whiterun are mine. Convenient, and nice small houses.

And I'm not sure how much inspiration has been taken from medieval times. The people of Tamriel have been using swords and arrows for 6,951 years (or at least, if my calculations are correct, that's the amount of time that the guys writing ES lore have written for), as opposed to developing things like guns, stealth bombers and nuclear warheads. :P There are a lot of parallels between real life and Tamriel that just aren't there.

Just because Beth used the medieval age as inspiration does not mean they have to necessarily follow everything.

Yeah but there isn't a real town like Vivec for example. A town like Winterhold wouldn't even have silt rider access in Morrowind

Yeah I know. But then their towns seem as small as villages

Blackreach? It still counts as a "city", except if you mean only above ground cities, in which case Whiterun, and Solitude in second

it's a college town..I look at the two houses in the city as dorms for the students LOL.

I like Markarth the best. And I would put Solitude up there as well, as for the size. I believe that someone did a building count and found that they were as large or larger than most of the other cities in Beth games.

I'd argue that 2-3 hovels scattered about a broken cliff and a deluded wannabe Noble claiming lordship over the waste is not a town at all.

This has me in stitches irl. It takes a mighty stretch of the imagination to pretend that 2 houses... count em one, two (just barely qualifying to be referred to as multiple structures) are representing a city. Corneria was a vast, intricate thriving metropolis in comparison.

My favorite cities are Markarth and Dawnstar. The cities do seem to be thought out a bit more than other Beth games, but they don't feel noticeably bigger.

As for Winterhold...it might as well just be the college. I don't know why they even included those broken down useless building (one is literally in rubble, and nobody wants to rebuild it) and decided to call it a town.

On the other hand, cities like Markarth and Solitude feel very unique and full of culture. Whiterun also has a nice environment and feels very 'comfortable'.

Falkreath doesn't get mentioned much but I like the town and the area around it. There's a gloomy vibe that sets it apart, and I kinda wish I could get a house there.

Whiterun because it's the only town that feels like a real place. With all the farms, mills and the brewery outside the city walls. It just has a believability about it.

Set Solitude up as my main home, Whiterun is where I keep my smithing stuff (its got 4 armour vendors, great place to get rid of all your crafted items). Riftens my treasury house and filled with gems and gold all over the place. Markath is a Dwarven museum of my own, and Whindhelm I don't use as there is still blood all over the place even though I paid to clean it up.

But if anywhere I'd buy a house in Morthal, something about the area and the seclusion makes a great place to conduct my... business.

The view when first walking up that road and seeing the city was a major wow.
Interior is nice too.
