Tropico 4

Post » Tue Aug 02, 2011 12:31 pm

Who here is a fan? If I'm not playing RPGs, Im playing strategy games. A rare and elusive console genre, but we get another installment at the end of August. So your thoughts etc.? Hopefully the terrible island population glitch doesnt reappear from 3. Might I also add, that Tropico has some of the best soundtracks you've ever heard.

I have the first Tropico, is great fun.

I try to play capitalist, but I inevitably become communist. I can't stand letting them live in those little metal huts, it's like they're living in Fallout 3. Free apartments and equal wages make for a happy population. Even if I do have to pay the professionals more to keep them in their jobs, but then I just raise their rent on their villas. From each according to ability...

I took this picture at the end of one of my games:

That old woman was with our island from the start, arriving as a laborer she lived in a hut until the people's government gave her a nice apartment to live in. We paved the roads, built power stations and cigar factories, andher children even went to high school. This former donwtrodden child now lives out her twilight years in her peaceful villa, watching the cornfields on the edge of town.

Do you RP in Tropico? I always RP, since the latter installments give some good options in terms of choice and prerogative.

Looking forward to the new natural disasters, the new buildings and putting loyal citizens in high posts. That tidal wave in the trailer looked epic.

There's seriously nothing like going through your census to route out opposing political figures through assassination from your secret police, who's HQs are inside a school.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgOUUnClabs&feature=relmfu There also seems to be a new building called Mausoleum to El Presidente, Im presuming that your leader can die and you can still play on.

Yeah, I once RPed as the Khymer rouge, and knocked most of the buildings down. half the population starved, the rest went to live in bunkhouses in the woods, near their farms. Eventually a new trading post was established, and later, a whole city, on the other side of the island. It was a massive upheaval.

I once had a tornado demolish all my farms and docks. That took a while to recover from.

This and this are two of the many reasons I love Tropico. That and they make their games for consoles now.

I love Tropico 3, so I'm pretty excited they're making a fourth game.

I had one of my chefs go rebel once, he was the only one on the island, but he caused so much damage. He blew up a mine, putting five men out of work, then destroyed a corn farm and a tobbacco farm.

He was eventually aprehended after years of hiding in the jungle when he came out to attack a coffee plantation, and my soldiers were already in the area. They chased him down the rows of plants, until my general shot him dead with his service pistol. That man was a 20 year thorn in the side of my government.

With one of my islands in 3, I started conscripting troops, which lead to lots of Rebels attacking my Gold mines and Jewelry factories, so I executed the Radio DJ and the Rebels stopped attacking.

I gotta start keeping my eye on specific Tropicans.

I typically play purely to complete the goals, like earning tons of money, happiness, and respect. http://i.imgur.com/sBmYC.jpg

You should definitely try out micro managing your populace. Nothing more fun than causing an "accident" that kills the whole family of a rebel, or a political rival. I once exterminated a whole neighborhood because of one assassination attempt on El Presidente. I also reward the loyal with expensive mansions over looking the slums of the least loyal.

I renamed her Captain Cuba or something like that. It was what she said she wanted.

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/strategy/tropico-4/news/6324501/we-just-played-tropico-4?mode=previews nothing especially important for vets, but for people new to this hidden gem of a series, this will give you a good overall view of what type of game this is.

I had an insane ruler that would kill a priest every time the treasury went into the red. the Church hated me, so I burned their Cathedrals down.

Irresponsible free market economics.

Hmm, is Tropico 3 as badly optimised as they say it is? It seems like 4 will be much the same, and I want to know if my computer is going to stutter horribly.

It's always run fine for me, but then again I have an above average PC. Do you meet the minimum specs?

Do you have a console? You cant mod, but its better than lots of lag. Yeah, 3 was not only optimized terribly, but it suffered from an enormous amount of technical issues.

I heard the console version has more issues, because they lack the most recent patch(es).

yeah, the console versions major problem is the population glitch where you cant load your island after you hit a certain population. Other than that, Tropico 3 worked great for me. Id love to play on PC, but since my PC crashed playing Galactic Civilization, Im sure it would crash on Tropico 3. So I'm console until Skyrim, then Im getting a gaming PC.

I've seen tropico 3 in stores a few times, but the box was never enough to push me into a buy, but if Xarnac is making a thread about the new game in the series, it must be worth a try.

And then some. But you never know. My graphics card is cutting it a bit fine for Tropico 4. I might just get Tropico 3 on the cheap and play that for the time being.

Do you have a console?

I do, but it's a PS3.
