This one was a strategy game with a chess-like board. It was browser-based, with fantasy characters like mages and knights rather than chess pieces. I used to play it a ton, not sure if it's even around anymore, but I can't find it.

edit: It wasn't this "War Chess" game I keep seeing, iirc it had a black background and a floating board that was just gray squares of the same shade.
