I'm sure your interior cell buffer should be higher, like 32. And I think ipreload is in bytes, so youve set it to 419mb which isn't enough lol.

Could be totally wrong though.

The Nvidia tweak guide explains about increasing those settings with examples, an ugridstoload stuff.

and that is what it spit out for "systems above 12 GB" but I noticed that as well.

I see a lot of different methods just wondering which one works the most stable.
Some people just double the exterior cell and add the ugrid line but I kind of would love if someone could clarify what the other values actually do.

Well I've never messed with ugridstoload but I have change preload size. I changed it to 2gb as per the tweak guide. It was smooth for a while. Changed it back to default, and didn't notice any difference.

The tweak guide tells you what settings to have if you want ugridstoload at 7 or 9 etc :)

all looks good, except the uexterior cell buffer. Im running 7 ugrids, and my buffer is at 64. some guide i read about changing them had a formula for the buffer.

also i have been using that skyrim configurator, and i believe it also change it to 64.

where'd you get the 72?


...ah found it in the gforce tweak guide!

Just what that ini generator kicked out for 7 grids....in the end I went with exterior 64 and interior 32(I think blackreach is the only place if any this would have any affect). No limits or any other lines for now.

You could try my extreme memory settings and see how they work: (I use these for FNV, haven't tried them on Skyrim)

uInterior Cell Buffer=32
uExterior Cell Buffer=196
iPreloadSizeLimit=262144000


EDDDITT: Does that iNumHWThreads line do anything?

Be sure you don't change the uGrids back to their default state. Unless ya know how to keep your save files from corrupting.

Nope not for me it didn't.....I think most of the stuff these .ini generators are spitting out is half redundant stuff that no longer works but did in previous titles or is no longer needed...but I cannot say for sure. Going to post my .ini's when I get home feel free to use this thread to compare guys. :D

Couldn't be any happier with shadows unless I wanted to drop my FPS a lot and opt for a 4096 resolution across the board. Also, 78 FOV seems to be perfect for a 1080p resolution. Open to suggested tweaks!

Actually I just bumped it all up to 4096 and I have my FPS limited to 40. So far no lag or stutter.

Sorry to intervene like this, but I wonder if you might have any enlightening insights on what the primary and secondary settings actually do, or what they specifically influence, or if they are described/explained somewhere? (To avoid my head hurting, I have avoided touching them or even thinking/speculating about them.)

More specifically, I have tested, observed, and understood the impact of the main iShadowMapResolution setting on shadow quality. However, the primary and secondary values and what they are about is not clear to me, and I would appreciate any pointer in the right direction.

I do know, that the Geforce optimization guide says that "The defaults for Ultra are 1024 and 2048", However, as far as I can tell, those are in fact the defaults for the secondary and primary settings in all the quality presets, and not only Ultra, so there at least is an inaccuracy of sorts.

@Inki Sure thing man this is from the Nvidia tweak guide
  • iShadowMapResolutionSecondary=4096 // Increases the detail level of shadows. The max setting, 8192, massively improves shadow quality, but in our testing we discovered a few objects and areas that absolutely crippled performance on even our beefiest machines when using 8192, but not 4096. As such we recommend sticking with this lower setting. Other possible values are 2048 and 1024.
  • iShadowMapResolutionPrimary=4096 // As above.
The performance impact of this tweak is linked directly to the ShadowMapResolution settings. The defaults for Ultra are 1024 and 2048, respectively, which means that the performance ‘cost’ of Secondary shadowing will quadruple, and the cost of Primary shadowing double. If you’re losing too many frames per second lower the Secondary value first, and then the Primary if problems persist.

As far as what is primary and what is secondary is beyond me.

My next personal goals :
- find a way to get the sun shadow to actually move constantly and very slow as if in total realtime(terrible shadow acne)

-force trees (no skinned trees in view range)

-get a playable Ugrid 9 setup that is totally stable including AI

The difference between primary and secondary and what they stand for confounds me too, especially as I seem to get fairly passable shadows on my surely much less capable rig (FX-60/8800GT, for the time being) by ramping up just the main setting. Well, nevermind that.

Yep with the ini I am running it is not much of an issue. I am aware of the tweak I just need to take the time out to trial and error one that I like.

Commenting further on the shadow settings:

I use the following values for those ini settings that are influenced by launcher shadow detail presets:
- iBlurDeferredShadowMask=3 (default for "High" & "Ultra")
- fShadowDistance=5000.0000 (between defaults 4000 for "High" and 8000 for "Ultra")
- iShadowMapResolution=4096 (default for "Ultra")
- fShadowBiasScale=0.3000 (default for "Medium", haven't gotten to testing this yet)
- iShadowMaskQuarter=4 (default for "High" & "Ultra")
(Note, that since 1.5 the game engine seems to reset the last value to 4 no matter how it is set originally)

In addition to that, I have
- bTreesReceiveShadows=1
- bDrawLandShadows=1

Even though my rig for the time being (FX-60/8800GT) is gradually getting a bit outdated, I have no problems handling these settings (at least with my 1280X960 resolution), and I am fairly satisfied with the shadows that they create.

All other settings that might possibly have anything to do with shadows are where Skyrim sets them by default. This includes:
- iShadowMapResolutionSecondary=1024 (default irrespective of any quality presets)
- iShadowMapResolutionPrimary=2048 (default irrespective of any quality presets)

In fact, no matter what values between 1024 and 8192 I try for the secondary and/or primary settings above, I get absolutely no difference in my shadows, and test screenshots I make of shadows around the main tree in Whiterun at a fixed location are visually completely identical. I find that perplexing both in terms of what the Geforce guide claims and how you seem to be impacted by those settings. I guess there perhaps might be some other setting that enables sensitivity to those values, or perhaps they may be relevant to crossfire or some other specific hardware or other scenario, or the world is just full of mysteries.

So please excuse me for my curiosity, and I hope you can indulge it, but I wonder if there is any specific situation, where you can clearly see a visual difference caused by the primary/secondary settings?

I don't understand why you would have:
- iShadowMapResolution=2048 (default for "High", rather than 4096, the default for "Ultra")
but maybe it has something to do with having higher values for the primary and secondary settings.

And by the way, Mr. Eeyore:

I happened to notice that you had
- iBlurDeferredShadowMask=20
which seems a bit excessive to me. When I tested this, the effect seemed to max out at 7, where distant shadows were blurred to the point of vanishing. Well, maybe there is a different world at 20, that I never went to.

I also noticed that you had the following non-default settings:
- iShadowMode=4 (rather than 3)
- iShadowFilter=4 (rather than 3)
I wonder if you could point me to a source where you picked those up or that would explain what they influence, because here again I am unable to observe any visual change in shadows due to adjusting these parameters.

Before 1.4 I was just using shadows on High so I built my prefs from there...not Ultra.
In regards to settings not taking......tried read only after you are done with edits?
