Now the other tower, Tower B, is a worse then those specs without a decent graphics card. I can't link a Dxdiag for that computer because it shuts off on its own and I can't seem to fix the problem.

I have about $300, and I really want to play Starcraft 2 and have it run and look great. So my question is - What should I do with these towers and this money to achieve my goal of playing SC2?

Edit - Oh and both computers use XP, and I would like to upgrade to vista or 7 or whatever.

With that processor, I doubt it would run at all. It's a pretty CPU demanding game.

Agreed, and upgrading the CPU at this point isnt worth it really. I personally say scrap it and build a new one.

So sell both towers and build my own?

Edit - Would a pc store buy that Tower B from me even though it doesn't work right?

Honestly, I don't know of many places that would give you much money for either of those, even if B was working.

Now if Tower B has XP Pro on it, that's a different matter. There is a fairly large second-hand XP pro market right now due to a decent business demand for it for legacy hardware/software. I know a couple of places just stocking up on it. Demand for Home isn't nearly that great since it lacks WMI, RDP server, and AD joining.

So, if you get even $100 for them I'd be surprised. Most places I know would just tell you to take them to a recycling center.

You would be better off saving up another $300 ($600 total) and building a new pc. $600 should be a very good (mid end) system, anything over $800 is really good and $1200+ plus is high end.

I spent about $1600 on mine last year and there is nothing it can't handle. At the worst case I will just buy a new video card to replace the 5870 sooner or later.

The only problem is I don't know how to build my own computer.

Don't worry about that, when you get around to it, this forum can tell you more then you ever wanted to know about the subject.

My friend's dad could probably help me out as will you guys, but will a $600 machine run Starcraft 2 well? (Also I'm kind of doing this now to prepare for Diablo 3!)

A $600 could run most games very well, depending what you need. Assuming you already have a monitor/keyboard/mouse/speakers.

Definitely. It's ironic because my mouse and keyboard are designed for gaming but my actual computer isn't.

I was checking http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Gamer_Xtreme_1000/out. Could I get a superior machine if I built my own for $600, or would I end up with basically the same power as that computer I linked?

Edit - Oh man, they have all these options to add or subtract parts and change the price. They also have this FPS meter, is it legit? It shows the expected perfomance of games like SC2 and Modern Warfare and right now its at 70 FPS for SC2 on ultra settings. (I switched to a Intel? Core? i3-2100 3.10 GHz 3M Intel Smart Cache LGA1155 instead of a Intel? Core? i5-2500K 3.30 GHz 6M Intel Smart Cache LGA1155.)

The PC you linked starts at mid $750. Build your own if you got that much to spend. With the price rate going these days for components, you'll end up getting better quality parts for your money and likely a more powerful PC. CyberPowerPC is a decent custom build site, but their component selection (as respectable as it is) is still limited. You'll end up paying more for certain things where that money could be used elsewhere to beef up the performance.

There are tons of guides out there now to build your own. Newegg even posted plenty of youtube videos on exactly how to build a PC all the way to installing the OS.

If I ordered a PC from CyberPowerPC, would it come ready to play? With the OS and everything already installed?

I highly doubt it.

I don't recommend that downgrade for a gaming PC.

Yes probably. I dunno how much the shipping on this site is, but you would get individual parts delivered a lot faster from Newegg. (and a lot cheaper I'll bet, so factor in shipping costs)

I'm sure I would save a lot of money if I built my own PC, but I am incredibly lazy and would rather just pay more to have someone do it for me. If I have to spend more to get a fully built PC shipped to my house, that's fine.

I checked out Newegg and I like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227352 ,but there is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227339 How much of a difference is there between these two towers?

Pretty huge. The GTX 550Ti is a far better card than the GT 520. However, it's not a $200 difference. You see, this is where the problem lies with pre-builts....unreasonable mark-ups as you get to the more powerful components. Plus the power supplies in these systems are unknown generic rubbish that'll last you maybe a couple years before it needs to be replaced.

If you're willing to spend $750, you REALLY should be building your own. Better components, value, and an art you can be proud to say you built. Seriously.

Maybe when I'm older and have a little more experience with computer gaming, I will build my own PC, but right now I'm going to save up for http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227352 I was reading alot into building my own PC and it looks like a lot of work and time is required, and while time I have in spades, the work is a deal-breaker. This PC fills my needs (looks pretty cool in my opinion) and is in my price range.

I can tell you, it's not that hard to build your own. The industry is pretty standard as far as how it works. There's a proper place to put every piece of hardware, and most of it simply fits into some nice slots built specifically for the piece. Then you screw it all into the chassis and wire it all up to the power supply unit. That's actually the most annoying part for me...

In comparison though, what I am using right now is a $2000 Alienware desktop (which I fortunately didn't buy, it was a gift). As shiny as it is, it is only as powerful as a computer I probably could have built myself for less than $1000. Prebuilt machines look nice in all of the advertising, but they're pretty big ripoffs. The only prebuilt machines you should ever have to compromise with are Laptops, because there's really no way to build one of those yourself. For Desktops though, building your own is the cheapest and most effective way of getting a gaming desktop. My friend built his own for $1300. The thing is a beast. It will be good for the next 10 years.

I'll just chime in and agree, you should definitely build your own PC. It's a lot cheaper, and the actual building process is actually quite simple, and shouldn't take more than a couple of hours. Buying a pre-built desktop is just unnecessary these days.

There's no decision to make. You build it yourself. The end.
