Two Worlds Two Magic

Boy, I really like Skyrim, and I've been playing it for about 100 hours since it was released, but the other day I loaded up an old save of Two Worlds Two...

And damn, the magic system in that game just beats Skyrim to death, kicks it in the face, and then pees on its lifeless body.

How did Bethesda, with all of its experience, manage to come up with a magic system so completely lifeless when compared to another very similar--and older--game?

It really feels like a couple of giant steps backwards instead of the new, innovative features it could have had.
