Ummmmmm WHAT?!

I just walked into Riverwood, casually, like I have done many times in the game and the entire town just began attacking me and the guards, for absolutely no reason, they all just turned completely and utterly evil :S

Now I've killed half of the town and the guards killed the rest, has anyone else encountered this bug? What the hell is going on?

Same thing happened to one of my characters. Had no bounty, it made no sense. The guards said, "This should be good," and the whole town attacked me and Lydia. I re-loaded and tried coming back to town, thinking the Thalmor I'd killed on the way in had something to do with it. But that wasn't it.

I ended up fast traveling to Whiterun, had no trouble there, and just stayed away from Riverwood for a few days. Went back there one day and all was cool again.

Skyrim is weird.

So weird, did the guards attack you too? Because the guards were on my side which was even more weird, it was like Riverwood's river was infected with some virus and it turned them into bloodthirsty zombies aha

Nope, never done anything wrong, enevr commited a crime, not infected with anything, hadn't recently killed anyone, nothing, the town just went nuts and attacked me and the guards.

Guards did nothing, and I'm pretty sure I didn't have any stage of vampirism though it's possible; I usually notice any diseases once I get into town.

FWIW, I had a very similar problem in Riften. No bounty, not a vampire, but the guards still went absolutely pants-on-head bonkers for no apparent reason and tried to kill me. ...So did Louis Letrush. wtf, man. http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1331838-riften-goes-bonkers-and-spawns-hostile-stormcloaks/page__fromsearch__1

Painkiller figured out a fix for me: go to the nearest non-hostile guard and blatantly commit a crime, like pickpocketing them. Go to jail and serve out your sentence, then return to the problem city and see if the guards are still hostile. Doing that fixed Riften for me...it's like the game decided I had some sort of uber-bounty in that hold. Except that I didn't, and had done nothing that would have resulted in a bounty like that, either. I still don't know what that was about.

I'm not sure how well this will work for a place like Riverwood, though. You'd think if everyone there was hostile because of a "surprise invisible bounty," everyone in Whiterun would be too, since they're in the same hold. But you can try. Hope it works.

No wonder Skyrim is such a harsh land - In Morrowind, townsfolk would slaughter you for accidently trying to sleep in someone elses bed. In Cyrodiil, downright execution was inevitable after stealing an apple. Now you're considered a fair game when lollygagging. I really wonder what one should avoid when visiting Hammerfell or Black Marsh...

Cheers for the advice, but in this instance the town attacked the guards and myself, they went nuts, the guards were on my side, I have no idea what happened haha. :S
