In 1989, I was working offshore Angola. We had a satellite telephone and were allowed to use it once a week. So 2 weeks before the end of my 4 weeks, I called a travel agency to book my ticket to Ireland for the day I will land in France. Then straight to Shannon airport and I will join my girlfriend who was irish at this time and travel to Co. Clare, Doolin. There was a good music festival there.
I landed in Paris. Went to pick my ticket: "Sorry sir, we have no ticket for you for either Shannon or Dublin" "What ! But I made the booking and paid the ticket !" "We do have a ticket for you, sir, but for Reykjavik !" "What !"
I called the travel agency and the stupid moron trainee booked my ticket to ICEland instead of IREland. Maybe interference in the phone. All flight were booked full for 3 days. And my gf holidays and the music festival were supposed to end in 4 days. I then decided to go to Reykjavik. This is how I discovered Iceland.
Recently, I was on a business trip in Bamako, Mali. I needed to fly back to Lagos, Nigeria. But there was no available direct flight. From Bamako to Lagos is probably a 2-3 h flight. So, I had to decide to take the only available flight with Kenya Airways: Bamako - Nairobi (6 h) and Nairobi - Lagos (5 h30) with a layover of 16 h in Nairobi. We were taken to an hotel and I had the opportunity to make a mini-safari. Good choice.
