Unofficial Dwarf Fortress Thread #?

0.31.20 is up! Any information about metal ores? Are they still that rare?

Just read the release notes, Toady didn't say anything about increasing the amount found, but there is an option in worldgen called worldwide mineral availability parameter. I would assume that it affects the amount of minerals placed during worldgen

I tested an embark on my netbook earlier today using .20. With default mineral settings I got a decent amount of silver. I think it's much more likely that you'll find metal but it may be difficult to find the type metal you want. I'm going to try another fortress out before I mess with the mineral settings.

You call http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/imgs/palegate.png a city? Well, just wait and see what http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/imgs/city1.png

Latest development log update talks about cities. Apparently each pixel on the map represents one square. :o

Anybody watch captnduck's new two and half hour DF marathon yet? I've been watching it a bit at a time, I'm about 50 minutes in so far.

I'm at 1h 34m mark and this video is pretty neat, good for begginers like me.

I have one question - the site finder does not show Flux Stone anywhere (I mean there where is Soil, Shallow Metals and such) though the site finder finds them and they appear in the game. Bug, or what?

Edit: or maybe I don't have it? Wish I knew what was that "flux stone", I'm still a newb.

I think I'll download the latest version this weekend and play around some more.

I got my friend into this game by telling him how I repeatedly threw a monkey at a tree until it exploded.

I think I may try to build a city one of these days. Granted, I svck so much at this game it's a disgrace, but I may as well try.

Bah! Cities are for humans, we're dwarves!

I finished watching captnduck's 2 and a half hour video, pretty useful. I didn't know about the DF2010 item 'rock pot' that can be used instead of wooden barrels. And all the livestock farm stuff. Chicksplosions ftw...And he mentioned some nice stockpiling tricks.

It's definitely a great start for new players, and for the more advanced stuff that comes after you get the fortress up and running properly his other videos can be watched.

I don't think I'd have the attention span to watch it all the way through.

I cannot find ANY bituminous coal in my embarks. Is there a way to find it in the site finder?

What?! :shocking:

Finally! I've been desperate for an alternative to stripping the entire countryside bare in my insatiable quest for enough barrels and bins - this should help things quite a lot! :D

Indeed. You need so many damn barrels, but at the same time you need beds, and some bins, and fuel for the forges if you don't have a magma force set up yet... So it's good that we can make these stone pots now, you never run out of stone. :P

Honestly, the only thing elves are good for is their yearly shipment of animals and live training dummies for the military.

Or they offer a welcome distraction to a group of sieging goblins.

The new dev log update shows http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/imgs/under1.png, http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/imgs/under2.png and http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/imgs/under3.png that will be found under cities.
Catacombs, dungeons and sewers (1,2,3) now wind their way beneath the city. Next we fill them with all sorts of monsters, including a mass of assorted night creatures! Vampires, were-beasts and armies of the living dead will terrorize adventurers and fortresses alike. These creatures can pass on their curse, condemning their victims to a half-life of suffering and dread. In the cities there will be haunted houses and vengeful ghosts, as well as powerful beings only awakened when their vast crypts are disturbed. In the evil wilderness the monsters of night will lurk behind every tree.

Downloading the latest version now. I've been thinking about starting up a new fortress. I'm working on watching the aforementioned video now, so I can employ some new tricks.

Capnduck has some great videos. You don't need to watch the 2.5 hr video he posted for DF2011. His DF2010 tutorials should be enough to get you started. His accent may be a bit tough to understand, but I think he adds subtitles.

Also, the best way to start out your first fort would be to start on an island, so you don't have you worry about sieges and other fun stuff. Nothing will protect you from the clowns, though.
