Unplayable game..

Okay, here is the basic problem. I installed a mod which replaced what I think was one of the files related to the game's graphics. After this, the game started to CTD whenever I load a game or start a new game. I deleted the file, but that didn't fix anything. Now, the only way I can get this file back is by reinstalling the game. The problem is that I bought the game on Steam, and it automatically backs up content. So when I deleted and reinstalled the game, I was left with the exact same files I had before - meaning I have no way to get the correct install back.

Is there anything I can do at all, or am I stuck with a fallout new vegas that doesn't work?

Why reinstall when you can just verify Game Cache Files, so it replaces or fixes anything you had done within the game's directory?

1. Load Steam
2. From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
3. Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
4. Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.
5. Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.

I noticed the same thing. Uninstalling doesnt delete the New Vegas directory so any files will persist and game files will be overwritten. Mods might be deleted but I'm not sure.

If you preform an uninstall first you can then navigate to the games folder "program files\steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas" < or something like that. You can manually delete all the game files before doing a clean install. If you decide to go this route don't forget to grab your saves and uninstall the game first.

I did this last week after having simmilar mod problems.

Thank you both, I'll try what you suggested. Need my fix! :P

Edit: I did what you said, and it apparently restored one file... but my game still CTDs the moment I load a game. I have no idea what to do at this point.
