Is using Frenzy with an assassin character practical?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 2:56 pm

I've always thought about how fun it would be to get Quiet Casting, then cast Frenzy on an enemy and watch him fight his friends while hiding in the shadows. Has anyone ever tried this technique and found out whether or not it works? Or are there complications that occur that make this pointless?

My current mage character does it all the time. It's a great way to whittle a group down to a single enemy that can be easily dealt with. My favorite thing to do is to frenzy the most powerful mob in the room so that everyone attacks them. It may not get them killed but it will certainly weaken them a bit. At the very least it means I don't have to deal with all those other mobs. My mage is not an assassin but is a sneaky attacker.

Yeah I'm wondering if you can do it while sneaking without being detected, so you can just constantly be casting it on a group of enemies until there's only one left without them ever seeing you.

Tried it? I thought that's the way you done it. That's the way I done it anyway. I had a Vampire assassin that only used Conjuration, Illusion and Alchemy.

I don't use the spell, I use alchemy to make frenzy potions and reverse pickpocket them into their inventories.

Yes if you take the silent spell perk they won't be able to hear you. But don't be too close to them. Apparently they can still see the spell and where it came from because the first thing they'll do is run toward's where it came from. What I normally do is load up invisibility on my left hand and then cast frenzy with my right hand. As soon as frenzy is away I let go with invisibility and they don't even bother looking for me. They just start fighting each other. You can repeat that as many times as you like. Some higher end enemies require a double cast which makes the frenzy effect stronger. For those I'll cast it and switch quickly to invisibility and cast it as before. If you're far enough away from them they usually only run a few feet before one of their own attacks them and then they stop looking for you anyway.

Even if they can't hear you cast, frenzy is an attack and will instantly put enemies into hostile seek mode... kinda like an arrow strike. The drop-pocket poisons option is much more entertaining but not nearly as reliable at the highest levels as dual casting frenzy.

Though he is not an assassin my bard was at a large forsworn base today and i used frenzy to stealthily turn them all against each other...i tried to go through the place straight but i got destroyed. so the frenzy thing is great

Projectile spells seem to work the same way arrows do, i find. If you miss a target with the spell, and hit a wall etc.. within range of them, they act the same way. Run to see what the noise was, then search where it came from.

As long as you dont miss a Frenzy spell, and it's powerfull enough, you dont usually have much to worry about. Dual casting can make Frenzy work really well on most Bandits.

I ahve about 40 in sneaking with my Mage, no perks, and I've just upgraded to Silent Casting, so it will be interesting to see how it works now. Generally if i fire from one spot, then move in a dark corner, they dont see me.

He is implying that you sound moronic using the past tense in such a manner, using Done rather than Do

I do not normally respond to snide comments. So this will be the last time I comment on this. The problem is, that this forum is filled with bratty little kids, that are always jump at the chance to correct someone. Why does it bother you so that someone else displays an inferior command of the grammar skills?

It's very effective. It evens some tough encounters that would be extremely difficult otherwise. Especially if you have a "one-hit wonder" build :hehe: Enemies still get alerted when the spell hits, even with quiet casting, but they usually start fighting eachother before they find you, and the further away you cast it, the less likely that they find you.

But frenzy poison and poisoner pickpocket perk make you completely undetectable.

Frenzy is the funniest illustion effect

Fear is the most effective for melee characters

Calm is overpowered with sneak attacks and you feel like cheating

Does anyone notice that there is a limiting factor when it comes to aggression from a Frenzy spell? What I mean is that when the effect wears off if multiple people are still alive (possible with high level enemies), they don't continue to fight anymore. In Oblivion once a Frenzy hit it meant someone and usually multiple someones were about to die as the mere fact that someone started a fight while under the influence of a Frenzy meant that those people were now mortal enemies and a fight to the death ensued.

Now it seems that if your targets don't kill each other in the duration of the spell, they go back to being best buds and want to eat your heart rather than each others if they are able to find your hiding spot. Just curious if others have noticed this as it kind of makes Frenzy a bit less fun and useful than it used to be in my view, although I suppose it was at times overpowered in Oblivion for just that reason. Perhaps the way Frenzy used to work was noticed by Bethesda and tweaked to work differently in Skyrim.
