Here are some highlights (and screenshots) for those who are too lazy to read the entire article :P

"Valve does have some great plans for Linux beyond just shipping the client versions of Steam and their popular games on the Source Engine."

"It has taken longer than most anyone would have anticipated, but the fact remains that Valve is in fact creating a native Linux port of their Steam game distribution client and of the Source Engine to run natively on Linux."

"This Linux work just is not some half-assed attempt by them to make it look like they are a Linux-friendly organization. Gabe's vision to support, embrace, and promote Linux are amazing"

"Right now the game they have been working on the most for their Linux client is Left 4 Dead 2."

Awesome! I'm a big Linux fan and I never would've guessed that Valve would ever support Linux like this!

I do wonder how complex the installation process will be, though. Hopefully no more complicated than any of Google's applications...

Nice. Running/installing the Steam client on Wine is a pain in the ass, it'd be good to have a native version.

One of the posts on the Phoronix forums sums up my opinion pretty well:

*Calls his post "Valve's Gabe Newell Talks Linux Steam Client, Source Engine"*
*Doesn't actually provide any concrete transcription of what was said*

*Pretends he had his hands on the game client*
*Doesn't show any game footage video*

I facepalm.
Of course, no need to say I don't believe it.

We've known for some time that internally there has been work on a client, but that doesn't mean it'll ever be released. Phoronix has been notorious about half-truths related to Valve/Steam news so I think I'll take this with a grain of salt until Gabe Newell owns up to it or the supposed video/actual interview transcript gets posted.

Personally, I'd hapilly forgo Hl3/Hl2:E3 if it meant a functioning steam client on linux mint/ubuntu/debian.
