Vamp attacks.

Barely an hour into DG, and I've gotten 6 letters of inheritance. Riften got tore up, and I haven't even been to riften until now. I thought the camp attacks were only supposed to happen when we were physically there to stop it?

Its bugged for a lot of people. The vamp attacks aren't suppose to happen when your not there.

I have noticed my Dawnguard character with 60 hours of gameplay, has had only 3 vampire attacks where only guards and npcs no one cares about gets killed. While my vampire character get a vamp attack every five seconds. I wonder if there is a connection between the attacks and faction.

Is that where those damn letters of inheritance keep coming from? Stupid Vampires, I think they killed the same guy twice...

My dawnguard characters get more vampire attacks than my vampire characters that side with the Volkihar. Maybe its just random.

Do you fast-travel a lot? I note that attacks happen after fast-travel a lot more than if you don't. I play one char just for the heck of it and he fast-travels a lot which makes for a lot of dead NPC's, insanely more so than with my other chars.

Vamp-attacks for me never happen when I'm not around though and after finishing DG with my char who sided with the DG they stopped altogether. If you side with the vamps they will lessen a bit but they will keep happening.

Just save before fast-traveling and reload when you see lots of dead folks. That's about the only advice I could give.

So I return to another of these threads...woo...

I have never fast traveled on my characters, I still get vampire attacks. Fast travelling does not effect it.

I have beat Dawnguard with the Volkihar, I still get vampire attacks.

There's a point where estimated tips fail with unexpected bugs...

I didn't fast travel at all really until DG. Everything is so spread out and i just wanted to get on with the story. This is probably just a bug, I suspect nexus will come turn up with some kind of fix soon.

My opinion on this?: Have them attack YOU. just let them be hostile towards YOU.
(maybe guards too, it's lotsafun watching 'em die)

You can't "let" them be hostile only towards you. Guards and various townsfolk will attack vampires on sight, often before you get the chance to engage the vampires yourself.

I got vampire attacks in towns that I had not been in. I do fast travel, but the attacks occurred in towns that I had not visited since starting DG. I have received several inheritance letters, also. I was really ticked off when Adrienne was killed in Whiterun. That did help me to use the forge though, since I don't have to wait forever because she always seemed to be on the equipment that I wanted to use at that moment.

You know you can "kick" NPCs off equipment you want to use just by clicking on it a couple of times, right?

Are you sure that the dead NPCs are in towns you haven't visited? I find that almost impossible to believe. Nothing can really happen in a cell unless you are there.

What I have seen happen is that I exit a cell by fast travel and then get a letter saying someone died after I left. I am pretty sure what happened is that I left while an enemy was around that I didn't notice. At that point the game probably just calculates some odds on whether the NPCs in the cell died.

Do remember that for unwalled towns you can effectively be in the town cell without being in the town. In some cases I think things can be happening just beyond your draw distance so you don't notice that something is going on. (Usually, however, I see mage combat from quite a ways away.)

Exactly. Furthermore, you can only receive inheritance letters from dead NPCs whom you've actually met (and who like you).

Riften got tore up, and I haven't even been to riften until now.

Doubtful. It's far more likely that your first visit to Riften just happened to coincide with a vampire attack that you weren't even aware was happening at the time you arrived. This is especially likely in Riften given that you're expressly told that you need to enter from the front gate (alternatively, you can enter through the meadery, but given the circumstances I'll assume for now that you came in by way of the front gate).

Vampires, when they spawn into Riften, will do so from the opposite side of town. So, if you came in through the front gate and stopped to chat with Maul, or Shadr, or Mjoll (as players will often do upon entering Riften for the first time), you may have not realized a vampire vs townies/guards altercation was in progress at the time of your arrival.

We cannot fast travel if enemies are near, so how would that be a good explanation? Are you saying that if it is taking place beyond the draw distance, then it is not recognized as enemies being near?

What does fast-travel have to do with this? I'm responding to the guy who said Riften was already "torn up" before he got there. Likely, it was getting torn up while he was there (but he didn't realize it). Happened to me on a couple of occasions already.

For me, Markarth is the problem. My first visit, and Arnleif and Sons will not open. I don't know if the Vampires got them before I ever visited or if I have to go do something else first. There is no dead bodies or ash piles around for me to confirm.

Did you check the Hall of the Dead to see if they've been interred?

Might want to check it out if only for confirmation's sake, then just reload if you don't want that quest initiated.

Edit: Although it'd be strange if they were killed since I don't think either of them leave the store.

Guess I'm one the lucky ones. Least i think i am, no LOI for me yet. Tho I did start fresh. So haven't had alot of time to make friends. Twelve hours in and only 3 attacks: 1 I died in, 1 that was put down easily and the other was a traveler that I attacked before he had a chance to do anything.

Yeah, I've had a couple of vampire attacks, also- WATCH OUT FOR THE MYSTERIOUS STRANGER!!!! It's a vampire that roams the streets of a town at night, secretly, and kills the townsfolk. He'll be waltzing around in a black hooded robe. All that said- I've had no letters, no ghost towns... but also no random 'wild werewolf' attacks either... :ermm:

This is why I am happy PC Dawnguard is out. Now, everyone can stop complaining (except for the part about them happening in your absence. That is even worse than before!) and can just type "resurrect" and click on the person that was killed. Tah Dah! Alive!

Hmm... I will need to watch for him. I bet that is what is killing people in their absences. Interesting....

None of this has happened to me yet, and I have gotten only one Lett of Inherritance - the first attack. I resurrected the person killed because this is PC. For the people who do have ghost towns on PC, KEEP YOUR LETTERS!!!! You can revive them later, but only if you keep the letters! ...And if you have PC...
