It essentially means "real" but in the context of a game universe rather than the real world.

I'm not sure if anyone has asked this question or if anyone knows the answer or even what I'm talking about, but its been bugging me for months.

I thought New Vegas is Van Buren, as far as the storyline goes? Granted, they made a few changes here and there but overall, it looks like JE Sawyer just imported what he wanted to do in Van Buren and turned it into New Vegas instead.

Think of Van Buren as more like folklore and/or urban legend, while some of it may turn out to be true, a lot of it is just myth and exaggeration. Another way to think of it by example. FO3 and DC wastelands happened 3 - 4 years after FONV. News gets back to Vegas about the goings on in DC. Just how much of that info would really be true and how much would be more or less made up? Since Van Buren never really got past the stage of being an idea on paper, none of it can be concidered cannon unless it shows up in a released FO game.

Huh? Not even close. Van Buren had a totally different story than New Vegas appears to.

They are referencing and using some of the Van Buren characters and factions, but it doesn't mean it's a remake of Van Buren. Just like them referencing and using Fallout 1 and 2 characters and factions doesn't mean it's a remake of FO1 or 2.

No, Vegas is Canon. Van Buren is not.
Meaning = What has been dissected from Van Buren will be canon but all other things will be left un-canon.

Events taken from Van Buren and put in NV are no longer from Van Buren but rather NV. Making Van Buren not canon but events from it canon. However the events are no longer from it since there in NV now. :brokencomputer:

Well, New Vegas certainly contains elements of Van Buren as others have stated, but so did Fallout 3 and its DLC. Some throwbacks are more obvious than others, but on the whole New Vegas is not even close to what Van Buren was going to be.

The important thing to know here is that Van Buren is not canon, only certain aspects of it that have been introduced into released or soon to be released Fallout games are canon. T-45d Power Armor is canon, the Chinese Stealth Suit is canon, Trogs are canon, Caeser and his Legion are canon. There are also elements of Van Buren that we don't know about for sure yet, but probably are canon, such as Hermes armor (the supposed name of the armor plastered all over the cover and promo art) and Joshua Graham. However the actual events of Van Buren are not canon, and the now canon elements have been modified to fit the stories they appear in.
