"Vancouver Police will once again request an early closing for liquor stores on Sunday, February 28th in the hopes of curbing the open consumption of liquor," said Const. Jana McGuinness.
"VPD has asked the B.C. Liquor Control and Licensing Branch for assistance with a 2:00 p.m. closing time for liquor stores in the downtown area Sunday afternoon," she said.

We have a lot riding on this game. So do the Americans. US beat us once on our own ice already, and now we're both going for the gold. If you haven't watched a single moment of the olympics, watch THIS game. At the very least you'll see some good shots of the ensuing riot afterwards.

It starts exactly 3 hours from now: 3pm Eastern Time.

I can't really say massive riots and completely pointless destruction of property is really the most desirable consequence of the olympics.

Generally, I believe that this whole "We're gonna beat them!" rhetoric is largely to blame; there are teams playing against eachother, the hundreds of thousands who say "We" have never set foot in a rink, much less ever been able to keep their balance on a pair of ice-skates.

The only ones who can rightfully say "We're gonna beat them!" is the people who are actually on the team.

Yes, I am kind of worried about this as well. I can remember when the Canucks went to the Stanley Cup final in 1994 against the New York Rangers and though we took it to game 7 of the series we did not even win the cup. However there was still a partying riot in the streets of Vancouver with complete idiots destorying cars, building, etc. It was a complete disgrace. I hope and pray that after todays game, no matter the result that people celebrate peacefully and there is no riot....

Really? I find the Olympics quite boring without that. :P

I might watch this, I usually hate sports but I do like hockey. And possible riots are always a plus. (to those not in the riot zone)

Being that your government has a large security force(consisting of personnel from the Canadian Armed Forces 3 active duty regiments, along with air and naval support), plus local and federal police resources on site, I couldn't see the riot being overly effective.

I was living in Vancouver during that, right across from the arena actually. It was mellow out there, sullen in fact. The riot started downtown, and was a huge black eye for the city and fans alike.

I think, judging from the tempo of the fans during these games there will be mass disappointment/jubilation, but no riots.

I sure hope so. Vancouver is a beautiful city.

Yes I think the riot was mostly around Robson street and that has been a very popular area for Olympic fans through out the entire games...I just hope they are peaceful in the celebration after the game.

Wouldn't shutting down the liquor stores in Canada cause more riots than hockey?

Lololololo. This happened to my friend, so they brought Jones to their prom.

Usually when you want alcohol and its after hours when the LCBO or Beer Store is closed you can go to restaurants and bars and they will sell you the extra bottles they have (Do this in T.o). But not when the stores go on strike.

Win, lose or draw...they are both winners and have both done outstanding jobs. I can see no cause for riots but rather for celebration.

I do hope both countries and it's peoples have been taught the importance of winning and losing in a more graceful manner than to riot.

For me, I have no favorite team in this as my nearest neighbor is Canada and my country is the USA...I love them both and both deserve recognition for being damn good teams.

There are some...who would do things...

I on the other hand, celebrate our team so far and all the medals we've won. I never thought we would have won so many gold medals.

Gold or Silver tonight, I'll be watching a good game. Bring it on!

My thoughts exactly---people need to learn it's just a game. It's ok to celebrate and support your team on a victory that they earn, but when celebration gives way to destructive rioting---that's just plain dumb. Million dollars of damages and felony on your record is not worth it.

Well there are also thousands of morons who only watch the Stanley Cup finals or the Olympics. Then they claim, with knowledge that can only come from watching hockey once a year, that Canada is easily the best team in the world and no one else has a chance.
