Either wear a helmet or start a new game. Outside of the console commands on PC, there is not way to change your hair.

Even then, it is not the best thing to do on the PC. It can cause character weirdness if not done properly.

Is that why your avatar wears a hood?

If you use showracemanu to change something, your racial powers will disappear. Even worse, if you change race, all your skills will be reset.
So always keep the ID of your racial or your skilllevels written down somewhere if you tinker with that command.

Trixs is to type tgm (god mode) before showracemenu this will remove most issues.
You still lose temporary effects like guardian stones and blessings.
And do not change race or six.

That's only if you change your race. Changing only your appearance/name has no negative effects.

You're correct about stats. But there are still problems to be aware of. Changing the position of even one appearance slider will automatically reset certain other appearance sliders back to their default positions.

When you open the race menu, your color sliders are reset to defaults, which are easy to reset. I've never had any other slider change, and I've never had any other weirdness as long as you don't touch the race. I've used it literally hundreds of times. The sliders do like to move around, but nothing will change unless you fiddle with it. Different races have different stats and the game chokes when it tries to recalculate, which is why changing your race is bad. It doesn't need to recalculate anything when changing gender. I've changed gender on characters without any weirdness, though I've only done it a couple of times, so don't quote me on it.

If you decide to make a new character, there are plenty of example http://www.truancyfactory.com/mods/skyrim/skyrim_characters.html on my website.

PC players have a console command that allows them to do so but as its mentioned in here it can be rather tedious.

Console players you cannot at all.

I hope they add in a feature in the expansion where you can change your, hair, beard, face paint, and dirt levels.
