Vender gold. Am I cheating?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 12:54 pm

Coming from OB and MW, I was at first somewhat gold mad collecting as much loot as I could and dragging it to various vendors & traveling cities to sell it all. I have found lately that I'm out of things to buy, however. I can't find a trainer to train me higher in my specialties nor do the vendors ever have better things to buy than I can find / smith / enchant. Sure I need some gold for buying materiel such as ebony ingots I may run short of but generally, I can find a good weapon in a dungeon, smith it up and then enchant it for something much better than any vendor has.

Or maybe I'm messing with the wrong vendors.

No you're not cheating, but you ARE getting fat from eating all those chips.

That's great! The Skyrim miracle diet: install mod to allow merchants to have more gold -> eat less chips.

considering that the CK is being given as part of the game by the developers then anything you create and install with it is not cheating IMHO.

personally, I have absolutely no problem selling my stuff, of course I usually do more trading then selling. if they run out of gold, I buy some arrows or healing potions, now they have more gold and I sell more stuff. of course, I have gotten to a point where I have over 65,000 gold and really have no reason to sell anymore stuff. I just keep all my "sellable" gear in my Whiterun house and IF I need more gold in the future I will sell it then.

To me (<-- important), it is cheating. You're changing the parameters of the game to suit you. Really, I think you should cheat, because it's clearly more fun for you this way. But I wouldn't do it, especially since there is at least one way in-game (Speech Perks) to achieve the effect you want.

But I would never do your Method 1 either; even though it is within the game parameters, it clearly wasn't intended and also is not fun.

My approach to the "selling problem" (and I do think it is a problem) is manifold:

* Go around town and sell to everyone I can find. This adds to fun because I feel like I am developing relationships with all these NPCs and it's cool to learn what kind of stuff each one will deal in.

* If I still have valuable stuff left over, hang onto it until I can find a buyer. This is actually fun because it gives me a reason to explore towns and find more vendors. I also feel cool carrying around 10000gp worth of diamonds and emeralds.

* Buy stuff I will use. Alchemy ingredients are a favorite. I have gotten into the habit of buying every alchemy ingredient I can get. Then I convert them into potions and sell them back. I often make a profit on this though - which actually hinders the "sell to empty" process.

* Try to get a house so I will have a place to stash stuff for later. This is a fun goal to work towards.

* If overloaded, throw something away. With 400 pounds of gear, there is definitely something I can live without. This is fun because it feels good to let go of excess baggage.

* If all else fails, eat food, drink potions, and freebase alchemy ingredients. This is fun just because it's funny. A couple times a week my character will sit down and have a monstrously huge meal of 30 pieces of venison washed down with 15 potions and spiced with wisp wrappings, glow dust, and butterfly wings.

* Do not loot every [censored] thing in sight. Only pick up something if ( a ) I will actually use it or ( b ) it is worth at least 100x its weight in gold. That Elephantine Battle Axe of Bling worth 5000 gold may look impressive, but if it weighs 65 pounds, it's really not worth it.

* For my characters who care about money, try to build up Speech skill and start building a Perk path towards increasing vendor gold.

* For my characters who don't need too much money, try to keep Speech skill low so you will get bad deals and sell out quicker.

Above all:

* When you get bored with inventory management, forget about it. Walk away and get back to having fun. You can sell stuff later.

Early in the game I picked up everything I could carry and vendor-ed it, now I only pick it up if it is useful or I need it for my item collection. Having a million septims is just unnecessary, since hitting level 10 or so my character has never been strapped for cash, even when buying training.

I have actually thought about this a lot. As far as single player games I would say there is no such thing as cheating if it meets the ultimate goal, which is enjoyment.

Everything in skyrim is a function of time and you should not be using it to do tedious actions that are not challenging or skilled based. There is no difficulty or enjoyment in fast traveling back and forth between towns. Honestly, I would just console in the amount of gold I would have been able to make, then sell the items. I remember having a stack of potions worth 90 000 septims. I traveled the world selling to my fences and at the end of it I went back to riverwood trader - it was where I stashed all my items- and found that they had disappeared due to cell refresh- at this point I simply reloaded, consoled in 89 250 gold and sold the potion stack to lucan who was more than happy to take my potions.

Also keep in mind that after a certain point, gold is pointless unless you are investing heavily in skill trainers. I have 300 000 septims that I will likely never be able to spend.

summary: just do it.

Sell what you want. Save. Kill merchant. Load save. Merchant has new merchandise and full gold. POW!

Oh.... no there's really a mod for giving each merchant 2k gold at each "turnover".

I admit, half of the time I would just drop all of the [censored] in the ocean and use that to give myself the gold.

But now I've installed that mod. Each vendor has 25,000.
