When playing skyrim i generally get less than 20 fps (more like 15) my system specs should handle the game on high settings according to the post at the top of the forum....


i have quad core phenom at 3.8 and a gts 450 using the drivers for the skyrim 290.53 and the 1.40 update

THE PROBLEM seems to stem from the fact that my GPU is running at 100% (or 99% according to my evga precision.) YET the temp wont go higher than 39C

This is odd to say the least since normal temps under load are in the high 50s and some times even goes in to the low 60s
my settings are at like medium high, i set it to high then lowered the shadows one level (to medium i think) and then i lowered the sliders as well a few notches....

when i went to sleep last night i just assumed o well svcks for me guess i need a new video card...but this morning (really after noon) i read that with a gts 450 i should be able to do high settings though i would be happy with medium...

That's a little odd, though I wouldn't put any stock in temperature monitoring as a diagnosis of proper behaviour. What drivers are you using?

the card when under full load, is usually 20C higher than what it is...so im assuming that the card THINKS its under full load, when its really not...also i tried over clocking the video card more than i usually do and this gives no real changes in the way the program runs....;

i got the game BECAUSE of the newest patch, so i have no idea how the game behaves with prior patches, and to my knowledge steam only allows use of the most recent patch so i dont know how to go back to older patches

Using the in game launcher to handle the AA/AF lowers my FPS a good 20 %, That said.....

Turn off all AA/AF in the launcher.....Run game to see what your base FPS is. Now using Nvidia Control Panel (Nvidia Inspector prefered) Add in 16 x AF first...check FPS....Then start adding in AA 4 x is good. Then add in SSAA (Supersample) 2 x is good.

Make sure "AA Trans Multisample" is always off/disabled.

wow i m jealous of ur temperature i will do anything to make it 39 degrees. Mine is running at 75 now celcius...even though u said it runs at 50 sometimes envied me. Anyway back to topic:

Check ur nvidia control panel, and see if Antistrophic and antialiasing is set to 'application settings' or low. That could be the cause. And like camaro said, turn of AA and AF in game and shadows to LOW.
Check ur PCI settings and see if its running on max performance and check ur GPU too. But remember dont overdo it as it will shorten ur gpu lifespan.

As said many times, anisotropic filtering doesn't affect frame-rate very much at all. the main killer is shadows on ultra, also keep AA at x4 or off.

o yea thats right....to run the game i turn off AA and i have like AF set to like 8 or 6 or something....

the nvidia control panel is mostly set to "application setting" and everything else is generally off....

I will try turning AF off in game and then experimenting with the settings in my nvdia control panel

for those interested in my temps...i use evga precision on my evga graphics card (overall good experience with them they even replaced my 8800gt with a gts 450)
i generally overclock the card, core clock is 822 i overclock it to 900 and the memory clock which is 1804 i overclock to 1880....the overclocks is not constant when i game and vary depending on need....what is CONSTANT WHEN I GAME IS MY FAN SETTING which is the max, in the case my my card the max would be 70%....the fan is key...hope this helps

also i will try you guys advice and see if it works....

PS i would be happy with 20-30 fps, granted fps really dosent matter, ijust want no stutters and lag....

by pci settings do you mean in the bios??

Goto the Evga forums. Could be anything from a driver conflict to maybe you need to flash a new bios for the grafics card. My 460's run at about 50% to 60 % max. But I think the 450 has a about one third the cores of a 460. Could be your Card is instructed to run full fan for the game.

The EVGA percision program will also set the fans up to 80% when you start it. But usaly they drop back down after a min or so. Make sure you have the have the box checked in the EVGA Percision control panel. (icon) configeration> (tab) Fan> (check box) Enable software automatic fan control.

With my game set to Ultra and AA set to 4x. The sli 460's. Run at about 70% demand on the GPU's and around 45c to 55c on temps.

I would expect for 450 to run the game on high settings. with AA 2x and shadows pullled way down, One should see 90%+ gpu usage.

btw my resolution is 1920x1080...

how do i flash a new bios to that card??

a few things i forget to mention im using win 7 and also a program called game booster 3....

This game works my GFX cards as hard as any burn-in or bench mark tool. I would suggest for everyone. Not to OC your GFX card for this game! Takes a lot of time to tweek a computer to run at a 80%+ hour after hour.

I have no idea if they have a new bios for the 450. But Ive had to update my 460's bios a few times. Just a 5% OC on a GFX card can easly kill it.

Ok some more info...

i started from the saved game that is basically after you get out of that cavern, at the beginning of the game....surprisingly the fps were very good between 40-60, and had gpu % usage in the 90s...mind you it was not stuck at 99%....also the temps were as they should be expected in the 50s.....


so i figure i will start a new game with playable fps...boy was i wrong....so that intro by the time i get close to the city...the fps went to 99% the temp started to drop from 50ish, all the way down to 39C the gpu usage was constantly at 99%, which makes NO SENSE....


so then i go back to the saved game where i was in the forest with good fps....SAME THING....constantly at 99% gpu usage (when prior to loading the intro to the game i would get some fluctuations) and the 39c temp....so their is something causing the gpu to think its working at 99%, when in fact it is not working at 99%....


so i turn off the computer, restart, play from the same saved game that is just outside of these caverns after the intro and behold 40fps and 49C with 99%-90% gpu usage.....on the default high settings, with 2x AA and 16x AF....i am running as we speak to the nearest city to see what the deal is....


ok so the second the thing where it makes me touch some stone (the warrior stone) the thing happens again fps goes down temp goes down...sould it be something with the pre scripted events making this crap happen??

restarted computer, loaded from the same saved game...works fine...it seems that when ever the idiot game wants to some some scripted thing....it totally F'sup the game....right not im in white run and it still has not started to lag...even after the guard goes "halt dragons around no one gets into the city" or something....

ok been playing to the point where i am now working with this lady dephine....after you get the horn....now she is tryign to make me go some where to kill a dragon to prove that i can eat their souls.....i have NOT had the problem that i spoke about again...it seems the only time it would occur would be during the intro cut scene, and after you shut down computer after the intro the thing would go back to normal UNTIL the part where you need to select one of three stones...

i have been logging like 8+ hours in the game non stop with out issues....nothing is wrong with my configuration, everything is optimized on my end....

BUT now their is a new problem...delphine keeps attacking me....AND SHE CANT BE KILLED!?!?! and it seems to be part of the main quest???

and after i fast travel to some town...and now EVERYONE in the town attacks me.....really??

what the hell is happeneing to video games...I mean i swear to god buying a video game new is basically like becoming a paying beta customer...i have had games that woudnt even install with the disk cuz of some steam issues (when i didnt even want steam in the first place) and thus had to wait a few days to get some support to resolve the issue....now those who are trying to DL this Texture pack cant even play while waiting for their 3bg download???

really are the developers (of all companies) ASKING US TO not buy their products??? it seems as if they would rather have us download torrents...
