Visual ShoutMagic Effects on Enemies that Resist?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 6:37 pm

Hi,

Not sure where the best place to post this, but I noticed something the other day I found kind of odd.

I used the Kyne's Peace shout on the plains of Whiterun, there were many animals about at the time; foxes, elk, sabrecats and the like. Doing so applies a purple glow to the animals affected by the shout... or so I thought.
I shouted directly on a mammoth, who appropriately was too powerful and resisted the shout. Problem was, the mammoth has the same purple glow on it as the nearby foxes and elks that were affected.

Seems kind of strange to apply the "this actor has been affected by magic" type of glow on an actor that resisted it. My situation was a calm one, there was no hectic fighting going on. I could foresee that if there was action about, that these ill-marked Kyne's Peace'd actors would confuse the player as to whom is actually affected and who is not.

I'm gonna go have a look at the Unofficial Patch to see if they have acknowledged/addressed this. Seems to me that only the actors affected by a particular piece of shout or magic should display the appropriate affected-by-magic/shout-glows, yeah?

Kyne's Peace is also like a Detect Animal spell in part, similar to Aura Whisper. While it is kind of confusing, the only animal the calming aspect does not work on is mammoths. People tend to stay away from them anyway if they're charging into a giant camp. But yeah, they come up all purple because that's the Detect Life/Animal part of the shout being used. As you noted, if you shout close enough to the mammoth, it does say it resisted.

Ahh okay. I dont use KP, DA or AW very much at all (I dont think I've ever used DA ever), so I wasn't really aware of how it works. I just happened to be running along and decided to switch it up. So it first detects the animal (apply the purple) and then attempts to apply the calming part which then gets resisted. Gotcha.

Thanks for the insight!

Yeah, I didn't notice it either until my current playthrough. Mostly because I'd use it in animal dens and see the purple silhouettes of animals through walls and was all "DUUUUUDE."

And no problem. :D

How many words of Kynes Peace did you know/use? Interesting it didn't work on the mammoth. I used the Bosmer special skill Command Animal on a mammoth at level 8 and it worked. I thought both were essentially the same. I may be getting it confused with Animal Allegiance.
