Wait for Dawnguard before starting long term game?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 6:37 am

I've started a new Skyrim game about 3-4 times but quit each one at around 20 hours because I wasn't satisfied with my character.

My question is should I wait for Dawnguard before starting a new game? I'm planning to get 100+ hours on this save so I want to start it at the right time.

I would start now. Then when you have done a lot of things with your character, dawnguard will be out and you can do it with him/her

Nah. Just play the game and try to get your character set before Dawnguard comes out. Y'don't know what to expect yet, so you might need a character handy.

Try this;

302 hours, roughly halfway through the Main Quest, haven't even started any of the guild questlines. I have though completed the Civil War on the side of the Imperials.

I too like to walk a lot. I also like to chop wood a lot and make huge amounts of money through mining (really profitable if you have transmute ore spell). I have 702,800 gold, I don't like using exploits or anything.

I was hoping to complete the Main Quest and the College of Winterhold and Companions questline before Dawnguard was released. However that doesn't seem likely given the frequent freezing I'm experiencing. Praying the upcoming patch will sort it and allow me to complete the quests I still wish to and the Dawnguard DLC.

I'm going to wait, because what if Dawnguard introduces new things into the main game, like adds new monsters to the level tables or something like that. I mean, if Dawnguard is totally self contained then fine, you might as well start now. But if not I'd rather wait. So I shal at least wait until the details are announced and I know what's in it.

From what we know so far is that there will be crossbows in the dlc and some new type of vampire and a snowelf. So we may get new vampire perk tree that might be worth saving. your perks for.

I'm not gonna begin a definitive new character at least until Dawnguard is announced. By that time I hope the 1.6 patch is also out of beta, meaning that the navmesh bug will be gone and the modding community will flourish even more.

By now I'm only running a temporary install of the game, which I use to try out some mods. When the time arrives, I'll completely delete it and start anew.

Well, considering that Dawnguard has no release date yet, and that non-xbox players have to wait a month after that, i'm going to say "no" :)

But of course, my characters are less than 100 hours, and i have no problem dropping and restarting them at any time.

Exactly what I think  I`m not starting anymore characters until I get official confirmation of what new weapons/armour/skill trees will be included into Dawnguard.

I wouldn't. I find it much more satisfying to have a character choose their own paths, rather than me 'prepping them for DLC' or whatever. I don't intend to drop or start any characters purely for DLC.

I'll probably just use my current main character for Dawnguard instead of starting fresh..
Then once I fully explore the DLC and know what to expect and what equipment I can obtain and what factions I can join/fight against, i'll probably start a couple new characters based around some of these things.

Never mind Dawnguard, i'm waiting til all the DLC is out before startng my truly long-term character.

I want the game to be in its most complete form possible for my main roleplaying character.

I'll be playing around a lot generally though and not bothering to really roleplay.

Dawnguard information will be released at E3 which is in less than 2 weeks from now. If you are not sure whether you want to start a character, I recommend two things:

1) Play through the beginning one or more times. You have mentioned that you've started and stopped multiple times because you were not satisfied with your character. Chances are this could happen again. So keep trying until you are satisfied with your character.
2) After E3, you will have a better idea of what the DLC entails. At that point, based on the content, you can decide whether you would rather have it be in the game from the beginning or whether you would rather start playing beforehand.

Personally, I'm mostly playing Diablo 3 now, and after I get tired of that, I'm going to start a long term character. I figure that, whatever happens, I'll probably be playing him when Dawnguard comes out.

I would like to do it with my 302 hour character (I don't do new games !!) but it's a question of wether the new patch allows me to do so.

Why would the patch not allow you to play with your old character? D:

Because it may only affect new games started after patch 1.6. My game has really frequent freezing and some respawning issues (the freezing is the main concern). Have you not experienced any of these ? The freezing began to get significantly worse for me around the 280-300 hourmark.

I'll be interested to see where the DLC takes place: will we be able to access it whenever? Will it take place after the main quest?

I imagine it won't interfere with the Main Quest, that wouldn't be Bethesda's style, since it's a "at your own pace" game.. I can't imagine you'd have to complete any quests before experiencing the DLC.

Do Not Wait.

Simply play carefully and slowly so you are happy with your character.

Walk EVERYWHERE. Don't fast travel. Enjoy the trip - think of it as backpacking across the Canadian Rockies. With dragons and other wierd stuff. ;-)
