[WIP] I Want To Be Your Companion!

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:23 pm

Hi,

I've decided to add a fairly true representation of myself as a playable companion for the game.
I'm making the mod from scratch and I am progressing well. I have most of the functional aspects working now, just really need to voice act the dialog and expand on the NPC's quest aspects.

The thing is typically I'm a nice guy, I would probably side with the NCR given the story of FONV,but like a large majority of players probably I don't really take games that seriously.
I like the idea of indulging a destructive and malevolent apocolype hardened side of myself playing this game and felt the companions a bit too on the conservative side.
As such I think doing an evil oriented character is appealing, and as I'm doing the voiceacting myself and I'm no proficent actor I plan to design the character as myself in the FONV world but think it'll be most appealing to do it as a cold SOB.

I'll be working on this in my spare time till it's done.

If you like the idea I post in hopes you can empatise with my longing for a more comically brutal companion and can offer any suggestions to the sort of commentary you would have liked from a more malevolent sidekick.
Quest aspects I can pretty much handle, that part's really more a question of how far I can get away with pushing the ban hammer I think. :)
I already have some pretty dark/dubious options with a comical slant that I'm toying with.

I'm thinking more about scripted dialogue options within the existing game.

The companion I feel needs to be receptive to allying with Yes Man and Cesar's Legion, I have not played the game enough myself to already know a lot of suitable commentary.
I'll go through the scipts to try and better figure out some good commentary for the various interactions in the game.

Beyond that though I'm sure some of you feel you could use a sidekick like this?

I'm hoping I might get some posts with any info about how you felt let down by your wuss-like compadres and I'll try and take any of it onboard as I try and create this jovial, yet nasty peice of work... :woot:

Any ideas about inventory as well?
I thought a modified shotgun might be good for ranged(boomstick!), carbines make the game too easy I think....
Any suggestions regarding this stuff would also be very appreciated!

Already read about a number of companion projects like this on the drawing board.
Everyone wants to do one.
I wonder how many of them will actually follow through.
It's easy to plan what you want to do, but actually doing it is another thing.

As long as your a female. I am running the ShilohDS mod, so I won't take any males along for the ride.

Sorry no can do, my falsetto squeals are prob not too appealing.
Saying that though there's scope for revoicing given the talent.
I'll fully admit that my voice really svcks, hopefully the dialogue itself can makeup somewhat.

Also this is fully achievable, it's not really very hard to accomplish at all, the biggest feat is the dialogue creation.
Setting up a companion that can be hired and responds to the wheel and other basic stuff only takes a few hours to get going really dependant on experience.

This is also going to be your biggest enemy.
Given that Nexus is flooded with female oriented mods; it's pretty obvious what the Fallout 3/New Vegas demographic wants.
Even if you work your ass off and create the most compelling companion mod out there, it still won't get as many downloads as a female companion mod (with her bewbs hanging out) that's only basically functional.
Sad, but true. :P

Talk to http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1145858-need-a-voice-actor/ about doing the voice-acting for your companion. If you're worried about the voice not matching the character, worry no longer! Feel free to be as evil, saintly or morally grey as you like!

As for not making a female...Fully realised companions are going to be very popular regardless of gender; I can't imagine Ruined-Tail or Julan as female.

I agree that some male companions can be popular... if they're really good. Female companions can be popular just because they're female though.

To me it seems if you make a male companion the mod has to be exceptional for it to be popular, whereas female ones can be quickly slapped together with no fancy features, or fully voiced, and they are insta-downloads only because they're female.
Personally a female mod must be exceptional for me to download, the male one just needs to look good and not be a jerk with a potty mouth (FO3's Dante for example).

OP: I'd certainly be interested in your mod :goodjob:

Edit: As he'll be more a Legion sympathiser that'd be handy for my current character. Getting Boone this play through is totally out of the question. He'd leave at the first opportunity. I'm kind of imagining yours to be the opposite of Boone (without the issues) :)

Yes the Fallout/Oblivion Community is rather depraved, anyone else notice that there's only one male body replacer but umteen billion female ones?

EDIT: The companion does sound interesting though. I'm tempted sometime to make an ex-tribal companion who has questionable morals.

While it's true that a female counterpart of the same quality and content will get more downloads (and thus more endorsemants, and thus come off as the higher quality mod to people who gauge mods based on those ratings  ), I do want to point out that the 3rd most endorsed companion mod on TES Nexus is, in fact, a male argonian. And is incidentally #30 on the Top 100.

Mind you, that's a pretty exceptional mod, but it's still proof that a male companion mod can do pretty well given the extra effort. Haven't seen anything like that for FO3 yet sadly; most seem content to wow the users with as many scripted features and cosmetic options as they can stuff into a single package instead of trying to breathe life into the character they're creating. I've been planning to create a few myself, but fate seems to rear its ugly head whenever I attempt something like that.

To the OP, I say good luck with your project. In regards to the character being a self-insert, just be careful to not fall into the pot holes that come with that territory. Would hate to see a potentially excellent mod ruined by wish fulfillment or extreme maschism.
