I was going to buy this game but... Bethesda?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 6:10 am

So I was going to buy this game to tide me over until Skyrim gets fixed (it's near unplayable for me even though my computer is overkill for it), but then I noticed it is also a Bethesda game, which worries me.
I browsed these forums and I see some people are having problems, maybe not as bad as Skyrim.
I also noticed that RAGE's recommended settings call for 4gb of ram (64bit support) and that the game doesn't actually support it (just like Skyrim).

So, is the game worth buying? Why?

Thanks!

(Yes, I know it is a FPS not an RPG)

It's just published by Bethesda, but it's developed by id Software, the same guys who made Doom and Quake. That should (1) allay your concerns regarding the Skyrim connection, and (2) give you a pretty good idea of what kind of game to expect. If you're still not sure, well try this for size: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=iv&src_vid=M4On9P_2__c&v=--wgAodsoCg&annotation_id=annotation_547050
Or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbXfVpxMcX8
Or even this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQ7HscCerT8

Hardware problems are - for very very much the most part - only affecting those who have AMD gfx cards. If that includes you, then check out the PC section of the forum: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/forum/175-pc/

There you'll find a fairly good set of fixes, most of which have worked for most people affected. If you're still wary, then you're probably better off doing a rerun through an old favourite until such a time as AMD's drivers stabilize.

Thanks for the replies!

I have an Nvidia gfx card so that should be fine, I just don't want to go through the Skyrim fiasco again, seeing the Bethesda name worried me.

I just noticed they are releasing a demo for PS3 soon, I'll try that and if I like it, buy it for my PC.

Thanks again!!

RAGE is the most criminally underrated game of the year.
Became fashionable to hate on it by the PC cool kids.
If you love sky high production values, blowing stuff up & incredible visuals you won't regret it.
It's quite unlike anything I've ever played before.

Despite the hardware issues i enjoyed Rage and in times of 8 hour railshooter Rage is even quite long (played 20 hours). But don′t expect up to date graphic or an open world game.
It′s pure ID. For me the most disappointing point of Rage is the ending. Hope ID will do something about that.

Skyrim run fine for me....

With nvidia, you will still get texture pop in, don't let these guys lie to you. Personally I find it very annoying, as well as the muddy textures. IF you have the devoted fan ability to ignore those "features" then by all means buy the game, it other wise runs fine.

The whole <4gb thing is basically because this game is a console port.

Whoa, wait: It's cool to hate on it if you're a PC kid? But, I'm a PC kid, and I love it. Does that make me uncool? 12 years later I'm still living by high school standards. :(

FYI I run an AMD Radeon 6970 and I had some initial problems with the textures getting flubbed, but that tweak ini file really did the job.

What's odd for me is this: I've found most of my game/compatibility issues come from running a Citrix program, specifically TeamViewer. I'd suggest killing your unnecessary programs like the stuff in your system tray before running the game.

I'd say that it became cool to hate on it for a certain type of PC kid; definitely not all.

Texture pop-in: I'm an NVIDIA user and I did have some at the start, but following the 2.85 driver update texture pop-in has virtually disappeared. I hear good things about 2.90 but I'm waiting till it comes out of beta before trying it myself.

Yes, textures are lower resolution than you might be used to in recent titles. That was a deliberate tradeoff. What you get in return for it is a completely uniquely textured world, with no tiling, no repeating. You also get a much higher polycount than you may be used to in recent titles. You'll need to decide for yourself which side of that tradeoff you prefer, but please evaluate the tradeoff first - far too many people home in on the lower res texturing and completely ignore the other side.

I'm not even sure what "texture pop-in" is, my guess is you can see textures load after a second or two?

I'm not one that bashes a game for having bad graphics, every game has it's own style in that department, and I take it for what it is. From the game play videos I have watched the graphics are fine to me.

The whole <4gb thing is basically because this game is a console port.

That explains a lot, but why do the recommended specs suggest 4gb of ram if the game can't use it?

I ran it on 4gb originally (I'm on 8 now) and didn't have any problems. The only reason I went to 8 was because I do a lot of audio editing and the extra memory helps; otherwise I'd still be running Rage on 4gb without problems. I think that some might be guilty of taking their own individual problems and generalizing them as bugs in the game (see also: "Rage doesn't run on laptops"; ummm - yes, it does, actually).

Its got nothing to do with being a devoted fan, its got to do with it simply doesn't happen, and anyone who has told you it does doesn't know what they are talking about. I had the problem when it first came out and I was really worried that that was simply how the game was going to be, but after the patch came out I get no texture pop, so yeah, got nothing to do with "blind devotion."

I got 42 hours out of Rage. I think it's the kind of game that is taking people different times.

I don't get why you said don't expect up to date graphics. I have to ask what are you playing it on? Rage may have a horrible ending to most( I actually liked it) I won't why I did I don't want to spoil it for anyone. Anyway one thing I can say is Rage has the best graphics on any game to date. They really are amazing, 60fps truly makes a game look stunning.
