Watching Stenvar kill a dragon with his bow is not fun

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 7:34 am

Dragons have got to be one of the worst things in Skyrim.

As a strict two handed warrior having dragon encounters where the dragon NEVER lands is NOT fun.

It is so incredibly frustrating running back and fourth, watching the dragon do the same thing over and over and not be able to touch him.

After about 10 minutes I think Stenvar had reduced the dragon's health by 1/3 with his bow.

This process is boring as hell.

Thank god for modders.

Just ignore it.

If it attacks you, flame/frost breath it when it gets close. If it doesn't just keep walking.

Yeah, how dare that dragon not come down so you can kill it.

What the hell is wrong with it.

Meh, any true melee class would have used a bow to attack that cowardly dragon.

Hide behind something! run to open areas with hiding places! Its fun to tackle a dragon the second it lands. Charge!! if it wants to breathe fire/ice on you tell it to SHUT UP! and close in for the kill! Its just a matter of tactics I guess, if your in a area where the dragon is flying and won't land then duck and cover, lead it to someplace to your advantage.

Spoiler
Progress in the storyline far enough to get Dragonrend, it forces dragons to land, tho it can be a bit buggy

Apparently your follower is pathetic. My follower isn't that good with a bow and can still kill a frost dragon in 3-4 minutes with hers and only steel arrows!

Any melee warrior that cannot use the bow as well is cannon fodder for mages unless relying heavily on magic resistant enchanted items. There's not thing like a 'pure warrior' or 'pure mage' class in the TES universe. Even by not using the well known crafting exploits, characters must be balanced to tackle to several different situation to be successful.

As somebody who started out with a 2H fighter style character, I actually found it strange that dragons would even take the time to land and fight.

I thought I would've had to damage its wings somehow first as it flew in the air, let it crash to the ground, then hack away at it.

But I'm not really complaining now that I know they seem kinda suicidal. Reading now that people are upset they can't attack them on the ground MORE is a bit funny to me though.

Even having a bow doesn't always help. During today's session I had 3 random dragon encounters where the dragon stayed out of bow range and simply would not fight me; in two of same, the dragon did attack some wildlife a goodly distance away before moving out of range and staying that way. I tried using other shouts, but to no avail, and as I don't have Dragonrend yet I had no real way to force them to fight.

if they don't attack you, where's the problem? Walk away till the combat music stops then resume whatever you were doing before the interruption :)

Oh NOES! Dragons don't act in an entirely predictable manner and make it easy for you to fight them no matter what your build? Why can't they be more like FF monsters who are nearly always in reach regardless of their wings?

But seriously. No seriously.

Either take a shot yourself (may or may not work) or leave. No law that says you have to kill every dragon you see. Sometimes they don't want to fight you the way you want in which case you live with it and fight it on its terms or you say "ok dragon, we both live to fight another day" and leave.

Either leave or learn to bait them down, dragons are entirely predictable. They want to land, look around and ask yourself why they can't.

Even for my archer this is annoying. Out of nowhere a dragon flys over and I hear it. Then I see it in the sky flying. I usually sneak attack them because they're nasty and a breath or two will kill me without potions. Anyway, the dragons usually see me and might fly over me and breath their flame/frost breath or they will ignore me and go attack the town or any other enemy in the game. I was at Dawnstar and then a Dragon came out of nowhere. It landed for a second and I started to shoot it because it was attacking the guards, then it took off as I was trying to hit it in mid-air. The dragon flew over to and icon on the map so I chased it, it was flying over using it's breath over anything. It kept on flying away from me. It managed to get so far that it was a dot on the screen. I had to chase after it trying to kill it so it would leave me alone in the future. I ran after it. The dragon was going after everything but me. I managed to find it up the top of a hill so I followed. I saw it fighitng a ice saber tooth cat and I started shooting the dragon and then it turned at me as it was about 3-5 shots nearly dead and it flew off again. I was think "Hey get back here". I kept trying to chase it but the dragon knew I was going to kill it and it flew off and attacked a Cave bear. I went into sneak mode and finished it off in about 2-3 hits in the end. This dragon helped me fill my map markers around Dawnstar though.

Sorry for the long posts. I just wrote one of my minor adventures so fast... I type to much and I continue to type. I wonder if you will continue to read. I'll stop now.

Pure melee characters are perfectly viable - just fus ro dah the mages into a corner, then rush in with a power attack before they can get back up.

Also, wasn't patch 1.2 supposed to fix the "rare problem where dragons wouldn't attack" (but instead broke them even worse by making them fly backward?) Seems like 2 out of my three characters have had this problem frequently, if I had to guess the main difference between them is that the two that never get attacked have much higher sneak skills.

dragon can fly and attack you from air where it's relatively SAFE for him dragon has some level of inteligence -> why would he need to land to kill you when ha can just keep flyinf and strafing you with fire breaths you need to give him a reason to land -> learn to shoot a bow or throw a fireball or shout up a storm.

Aye, as a melee character, it's when the dragons get clever that you have problems. If you're melee, that means you're likely going to have HUGE amounts of armor. A dragon's blows go *tink!* and just bounce off. It's when they realize this and go "Screw that, I'm going mage mode on this guy!" that they become a decent challenge. The trick is to trick them into thinking you're not there anymore. They'll think it's safe, and they'll land.

They'll be wrong, too.

Just move around? It will eventually find a place to land, if you only tried to find a fix yourself instead of complaining on the forums

Dodge its hits and try to hide somewhere.

Sooner or later they get tired...
